Years ago Bill Farrell introduced me to Dick. He was a tremendous man and his exploits are well documented. He certainly will be missed and not be forgotten in the racing community.

Dick Ring stories continue. The Yarmouth Clam Festival held a moment of silence in memory of Dick. Even in death, he continues to influence those of us who are passionate about the sort.

Late 1970's I started my cycling career as a novice racer. A couple of my friends went up north into Mass to race and within that group was this guy who instructed us all the way through the event. It was Dick. Many years later we worked at running races together for years. He was not an official at those events but ran them from to podium. He will never by forgotten as the spirit of New England.

I first met Mr. Ring as a young lad in 1970 watching the bicycle race he promoted fly around our Chelmsford neighborhood. My grandparents lived a few doors down and after that I was absolutely hooked on the wonderful sport of cycling. I rode my first tour with Dick in 1971 on a 3 speed English racer and he stayed with me for 50 miles showing me the art of paceline, pack riding and racing. He helped a local group of riders start the Nashua Velo Club out of Goodales Bike Shop and I had the pleasure working the booth with Dick at several criteriums around Holman Stadium and the infamous Monadnock Hill Climb. The love of cycling stuck with me going on 50+ years. My funniest memory was Dick playing pond hockey with the neighborhood kids on Crooked Spring Pond... in his speed skates. That was a sight. Thank you Dick and it was an honor to know you.

When we were young and fast, would smirk when Dick Ring referred to any rider near the front of a bike race as a "champion." Now we are older and realize that he was correct. Anybody courageous enough to pin on a number and compete was indeed a champion. We will miss him.

I met Dick in the 1960s at training races in MA. He trained us to better understand the race, pace line and general tactics involved in the Sport. I work many races with him as a promotor and Official. He was the best. I traveled all over the country and never met anyone more knowledgeable of entertaining. The Sport was a much better place as a result of him. God Bless.

To add memories of Dick would take a long time and too much space. Suffice it to say, that he was a generous man with a silver tongue and a good heart.
His contributions to New England cycling and speed skating cannot be matched.
Thank you to all of you for loaning him to us.

Dick Ring is one of those guys who should have lived forever. Always with a quick story that made you laugh, just when you needed a laugh. For 3 decades from my era in the early 1970's to the 1990's his voice filled the air. From the big weekends like Hartford, Fitchburg, Walpole to the smaller road races and criteriums that were in Abundance back in the day. He made every rider feel better about themselves, we never got tired of the chatter, because we were all apart of it. Always the gentleman, dressed for the occassion, alert and quick, he brought a grin to my face every time we talked. He always found me, and asked where I and the "Boys" had been racing and where we were going next. Dick put, Jack Nash, Jeff Leslie and I up at his house and fed us during a 3 day stage race in the Boston area. When I was down and out after a big race he would find me and say. "Listen Billy, I know your broke and you are headed to the nationals, so take these, and he would stuff a couple of tires into my back pockets and give me a pat on the back. Yeah guys like this will live forever in our hearts.
