Dracut
Robert W. Kohanski Sr., 86, a longtime resident of Dracut, and retired Fire Chief of the Dracut Fire Department passed away at his residence on Monday, June 21, 2021. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Courtney) Kohanski with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.
He was born in Lowell on March 17, 1935, a son of Bronslaw and Dorothy (Conole) Kohanski.
Robert grew up in Tewksbury and Dracut. He graduated from Lowell Trade School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country during the Korean War.
Robert joined the Dracut Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter. He was appointed to the permanent department in 1968 and rose to the rank of Chief, retiring in 1995.
A dedicated volunteer, he was actively involved for many years within the Town of Dracut. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Lowell Firefighters Credit Union.
Robert is survived by his four children; Dorothy Murach and her husband John, Robert Kohanski Jr, all of Dracut, Roberta Dery and her husband Arthur of Chelmsford, and John Kohanski and his wife Michelle, of Dracut, his sister Sandra Walton of Arizona, six grandchildren; Kristina (Brian), Stephen (Theresa), Carole Ann, Stephanie (Austin), Courtney and Kayla, and three great grandchildren; Matthew, Sophia and Jack.
He was predeceased by a brother John, who died in infancy.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021, from 4-7 pm at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 115 Wheeler Road, Dracut. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tewksbury.
