Ron Ansin Obituary

Ron Ansin – a distinguished businessman, devoted philanthropist, passionate activist, and ardent lover of life, with strong ties to both Florida and Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on June 28th, 2023. Through his pursuits and his family, Ron leaves behind a profound and expansive legacy.

Ronald Marvin Ansin, the eldest son of Sidney David Ansin and Sophie (Shachoy) Ansin, was born on March 28, 1934, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Alongside his younger brother Ed, Ron spent his formative years in Athol, Massachusetts, until the family relocated to Miami Beach in 1941. Ron later returned to Massachusetts to pursue his education, embarking on a lifelong journey of community building in both Massachusetts and Florida. Ron's academic path led him to Phillips Academy in Andover, where he attended boarding school. He then went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Harvard College in 1956, followed by a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 1959. Shortly after arriving in New Haven in 1956, Ron's path crossed with Betsey Kander, and they embarked on a relationship, celebrating a marriage in 1958. Together, they raised four children – Kim, Ken, Barry, and Robert.

Upon completing law school, Ron settled in Massachusetts, where he assumed leadership of his family's shoe factory in Fitchburg. Under Ron's stewardship, Anwelt Shoe company expanded in size, and his own visibility and leadership in the footwear industry grew with it. Among Ron's many successes in his career in the industry was taking a stake in Cole Haan and helping the brand become one of the most recognized and respected footwear and apparel companies in the country, as well as representing the shoe industry in visits to the Carter White House. For his contribution and impact, Ron was inducted into the Footwear Industry Hall of Fame in 1996.

In addition to his involvement in the shoe industry, Ron ventured into various other business endeavors, notably in community banking and real estate. For numerous years, he held the esteemed position of Chairman at Merchants Bank in North Central Massachusetts. In 1988, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of Enterprise Bank in Lowell, MA. As his business ventures thrived, Ron's interest in politics grew steadily. In 1983, he accepted the appointment as Commissioner of Commerce by then Governor Michael Dukakis, who would later become Democratic presidential nominee. During his tenure, Ron spearheaded the development of the iconic "The Spirit of Massachusetts is the Spirit of America" marketing campaign. This visionary initiative significantly bolstered tourism and played a crucial role in the economic upturn known as "The Massachusetts Miracle." This remarkable transformation resulted in a halving of the state's unemployment rate, marking a significant milestone in Massachusetts' economic history.

Throughout his lifetime, Ron consistently demonstrated a deep engagement with his community. He assumed leadership roles within the local Chamber of Commerce, and later served on the Boards of Applewild School and Lawrence Academy, educational institutions that would shape the lives of his children and grandchildren. Ron's commitment extended far beyond these institutions, as he actively supported numerous organizations and causes. Notably, he dedicated his efforts to groups such as the Boys' and Girls' Clubs, the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, Ashoka, Brandeis University, the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts and, perhaps most proudly, the ACLU of Massachusetts. In recognition of his unwavering service on the organization's board, he was honored with the esteemed title of "Chairman for Life" by the ACLU. Ron's outstanding dedication to community service did not go unnoticed nationally either, as he received the National Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award for Community Service from the United Way of America in 1999, the highest accolade bestowed by the organization.

After publicly embracing his own identity, Ron assumed a prominent role in the realm of LGBTQ philanthropy, emerging as a leading figure in supporting and advancing nonprofits such as Boston's Fenway Community Health Center and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). Ron's contributions and leadership played a crucial part in the growth and accomplishments of these organizations. In recognition of his unwavering dedication and impact on the advancement of marriage equality, he was honored with the prestigious Icon Award by Mass Equality in 2012, solidifying his reputation as a staunch advocate and philanthropist in the LGBTQ community.

Amidst his remarkable contributions, Ron remained humble, steadfastly believing that he continually received more than he could ever give. His presence illuminated any room, accompanied by his booming voice which captivated all within earshot. Ron exuded an unparalleled zest for life, manifested through an infectious laughter that left a lasting imprint. His profound commitment to creating and inspiring positive change was unwavering.

Above all, his love for people, especially his cherished family, shone through. Whenever asked about his most significant achievement, a radiant and knowing smile would spread across his face as he fondly recounted, "teaching my children and grandchildren to swim." This statement encapsulated the essence of a man who achieved greatness in countless realms, yet found profound fulfillment in the simplest and most heartfelt moments of love and connection.

Ron leaves behind countless people whose lives have been bettered from his leadership, mentorship, and support. He is predeceased by his parents, Sidney and Sophie, and his younger brother, Ed Ansin. He is survived by his husband, former Mayor of Wilton Manors, Jim Stork of Aventura, Florida; his daughter Kim, his son Ken and daughter-in-law Jane, and sons Barry and Robert; nephews Andy and James, and niece Stephanie; his former wife, Betsey Ansin; his former partner Anthony Corey; his grandchildren, Kris, Ryan, Kurt, Nick, Indigo, Olly, Scott, Peter, Ben and Libby, and his 2 great grandchildren, Eliza and Ronald Logan. Thanks to Ron, they all know how to swim.

A celebration of life is planned for the Fall of 2023. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory and honor of Ron can be made to: The Ronald M. Ansin Foundation and sent to Kimberly Ansin, 64 Gibson Rd., Ashburnham, MA 01430.

Ron is not forgotten by the late Deane C. Foster and his family. He was my Dad's friend when Dad was Sr. Vice President of Merchants National Bank, and Ron chaired the Board of Trustees. Today, MarySandra and I will say the Rosary and other prayers for Ron, his family, and all who love him. There's a beautiful biblical verse that describes Ron perfectly: "The upright man walks in his integrity." (Proverbs 20:7). May God bless the Ansin Family, and take good care of our brother, Ron. Among his many, many accomplishments Ron was also the President of the Board of the Boston Repertory Theatre and helped us build the first new theatre in Boston at One Boylston Place near the Colonial Theatre. Ron was a joyous friend and co-conspirator who loved life and the arts. One of the most vibrant people I ever met.

Mr Ansin was a very nice guy. He sponsored a Parks hockey League that I played in I think in Junior high School or 6th grade. This probably was 1968 or 1969. We won the league championship with a bunch of guys who would go on to play at Fitchburg high School. He bought us all nice windbreaker jackets that said Anwelt City champs. And each one had the person's name. And he threw a dinner for us at the Old Mill.

He was just a really good guy. And I've always remembered his kindness.

Dear Ron,

I will always be honored to be your Godson.

Thank you for your inimitable wisdom. Thank you for your courage in being yourself and for modeling that for me.

As I reflect on your life, I realize that I don´t know anyone (let alone loved anyone) that lived a better, more joyous, and more impactful life than you did.

I hope you are up in heaven and that you and Mike are having fun and laughing, maybe some boating? Please keep an eye on Wyatt please; he knew how special you are.

Much love, and rest in peace -

Your Godson,

Cliff

To my Dad, and to my son Peter's grandpa, we celebrate your life and all the incredible impressions and betterments that you made for hundreds of thousands of people, locally, and across the world, in ways too numerous to express throughout your lifetime.

Your endless drive to improve the lives of others, to right wrongs, to quietly help individuals and entire communities, through your selfless efforts and in acceptance of human frailty you left deep and lasting impressions, creating a better world in so many ways; we love you Dad.

Far too few will understand, deep within you, the source that endlessly drove such pursuits, your true and profound zest for life and your unquenchable yearning to make a better world. From this total truth your incredible, truest essence shines brightest, it reflects your humanity and in this, the profound betterment that you forged.

In this light and in honor of the true kindness, selfless desire to make a better world, sharing soulful laughter & deep smiles, and sowing seeds of opportunity, together with so many others; we extend the impact of your life's work through the impressions left deep within us.

I thank you Dad for giving me, and the world, your love.
