America Elizabeth Schmaltz, 92, of Niles, Michigan, passed away on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at the Niles Care Center.
She was born on Dec. 11, 1932, in New Carlisle, Indiana, to the late Estes and Erma (Bowker) Headley. She married James Lintner on Jan. 24, 1953, who preceded her in death in 1972. She went on to marry Roy Schmaltz in 1977, and he preceded her in death on June 15, 1989.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ermagene Lintner, Helen Cole and Betty Jo Headley; and two brothers, Estes Jr. Headley and Forest Headley.
America is survived by one daughter, Peggy Ann Marks of Nampa, Idaho; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol (Mel) Hochstetler of Elkhart, Indiana.
America graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1950. She attended Manchester college. During her life, America was a member of AARP, the Women's Lions Club and the New Troy Grace Brethren Church. America worked at the River Valley Center in Harbert, Michigan. She enjoyed her time spent with the patrons as well helping them with there taxes.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, Indiana, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in New Carlisle Cemetery.
