Emily Marie Hahn peacefully finished her 84-year journey to Heaven on Jan. 9, 2024, at Addison Pointe in Chesterton. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Valparaiso. Prior to the service, guests can meet with the family from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Church.
Emily was born Oct. 31, 1939, in Michigan City to John and Irene (Kuchowicz) Swistek, who preceded her in death.
Emily married the one and only love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Hahn, in Michigan City on Aug. 1, 1959, and the couple remained happily married until his passing on Nov. 7, 2020. The lovebirds met at a local root beer stand where Emily was a car hop and Chuck became a regular customer and her biggest tipper. The Hahn family finds comfort in knowing Emily and Chuck are now together again in Heaven.
Emily is survived by her two sons, Jim (Beth) Hahn of Los Angeles and Jeff (Carol) Hahn of Chesterton. "Granny Em" also leaves behind four loving granddaughters, Sofie Hahn, Ashley (Michael Bartel) Hall, Raine (Ryan) Kouba and Kelcey (Matt) Puszkiewicz. Her granddaughters will remember her for taking on her role as Granny Em with ease and immense enthusiasm, showing up at all of their events to cheer for them, being their staunchest supporter, and always making them smile and laugh. "Great Granny Em" will similarly be remembered fondly by her six great-grandsons, Sebastian, Clifford and Lincoln Kouba, and Atticus, Hunter and Lawson Puszkiewicz, who often put a big smile on her face, whether in person, on face-time, or in photos and videos.
Emily is also survived by her brother, Stanley Swistek; her sister, Patricia (Bruce) Frankinburger; and her sisters-in-law, Marcia Hahn and Rita Swistek. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Swistek; her sisters-in-law, Nancy Swistek and Sally Stinchcomb; and her brothers-in-law, Gilbert Stinchcomb and Bill Hahn. Also surviving Emily are several nieces and nephews, including four who were very close to her, Kay and Gary Kahn, and David and Marie Stinchcomb, and Emily greatly enjoyed their frequent visits and appreciated all of the time that they spent together. She was also very close to Chuck's parents, Charles "Sally" and Mabel Hahn, who preceded her in death.
Emily graduated from MC Elston High School in 1957 and worked for several years for Dr. Milne and Dr. Kerrigan in Michigan City before embarking on a very successful real estate career that included many years with Long Beach Realty as well as with real estate companies in Kokomo and Valparaiso.
Emily was also active with the Rosarians at Notre Dame Church and the Meals on Wheels program, and she enjoyed volunteering at Porter Hospital and as a host for contestants in the Miss Indiana Beauty Pageant when it was held in Michigan City.
Emily and Chuck were parishioners at Notre Dame Church in Michigan City in their younger days when raising their family, and then they were parishioners at St. Paul Church in Valparaiso for the last 25 years. Emily and Chuck delighted in spending part of their winters in Aruba for several years, and made many trips to Los Angeles to see Jim and his family.
The Hahn family has difficulty finding words to express how very thankful they are for the loving and compassionate care that Emily received at Addison Pointe, not only from the many awesome nurses aides and fabulous nurses, but also from nearly every employee that came in contact with her in activities, dining, physical therapy, religious services, and even when she was just sitting in her wheelchair in the TV lounge or wheeling herself down the hallways to other units in the building.
It seems that nearly every employee at Addison Pointe knew "Miss Emily" and has a great story about their interaction with her. The Hahn family also thanks the physician assistants from Optum Healthcare and the care team from Dunes Hospice for their guidance and compassion.
Emily has left her family and friends with many beautiful and funny memories that include her flair for fashion, her delicious cooking and baking, her famous paper clips in birthday and holiday cards, and her good luck at bingo games and slot machines. Emily's beauty, feistiness, spunk and sense of humor will long be remembered and treasured by those fortunate to know her. Emily was a very beautiful person, both inside and out, and she always put others first, even in her finals days always asking, "How are all the kids?"
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Memorial Contributions be made to the Porter County Community Foundation.
