Calvin Phillips Obituary

Calvin Lee Phillips & Pamela J Phillips

Calvin Lee Phillips (59) & Pamela J Phillips (57), passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, in Pembroke.

Memorial services honoring their lives will be held at Pembroke Baptist Church in KY Jan 30th at 11am and Feb 7th at Grand Ledge Opera House in MI. We welcome friends who wish to share in their memory and help us pay tribute to their lives.

Cal filled his time on earth with a zest for life and laughter. He traveled the world both in the military as well as a private citizen, having seen numerous continents, countries and people all over the US and the world. Never ceasing to be amazed at nature, god's beauty or simple things that make the world great.

Pam made the most of her time as a mother, coworker and citizen. She spent a near decade devoting her time as a stay at home mom, then reentered the workforce with vigor. She was active in the community and often spent with her free time to better those who are in need.

Both were loving parents, active citizens and extremely important to those who knew them dearly and had the privilege to call them family or friends. Our loss is comforted by the knowledge that they both have passed on having lived full lives and are now in a place with the God they loved.

Survivors include their son, Matt Phillips; Cal's parents and sister, John and Margaret Phillips and Diana Phillips; and Pam's mother and brothers, Connie Johnson and Larry Shirey and Jimmy Johnson.

Cal was my best friend from 8th grade through High School. We worked together, played together and laughed together. He was Best Man at my wedding. As he went off to Army Training, Cal asked my wife and I to keep and eye on Pam while he was away, and to help her out when she needed. Pam was new to Michigan/Lansing, and wasn't always comfortable having to go get her groceries alone. I was honored to have helped them. The World has lost a wonderful couple. God bless them both.

I was blessed beyond words to know and spend time with both Cal and Pam. Cal could make me laugh so hard that I could barely breathe! Pam was the calm that complemented Cal's larger than life hilarity. They were meant for each other. May all of us, especially their family, take great comfort in the fact that they are in a place called heaven! Which simply means that they have never been more ALIVE than they are right now!! I look forward to seeing them again. :)

Cal Phillips was one of the greatest men I have ever known. I served with him in Desert Shield / Desert Storm. I was truly blessed to have him as a leader and mentor. He was such a dynamic person. The things I learned from him have served me well in my life. I thank him for being my friend throughout the years. I am a better man for having known him. I will miss him daily. I never met Pam, but felt that I knew her through the stories that Cal shared with me. He loved his family so very much. I was always inspired by his love for his wife and son.
This world may have lost two amazing people, but Heaven gained two wonderful souls.

Matthew, you know we're here for you and we'll see you and your family this weekend. To all, wit: Cal and Pamela Phillips were my best friends. After 36 some-odd years; our kids grew up together in Clarksville. Cal and I attended APSU, ROTC, and afterwards the Army. and life. People that knew Cal never saw much emotion from him, but I'll tell you I've seen the Man weep and it was ALWAYS for his Family and closet Friends. There is nothing Cal nor Pam would do for their friends and family. I remember fondly our graduation day at APSU and Commissioning... Cal wept as he thanked Pam for her support while presenting her a watch for her support in front of the entire class. From laughing, crying...struggling through school to building cars, sheds and alike... and playing music... they both loved life. Not long ago Cal and I sit, sipping KY's finest, catching up, telling' lies and discussing life while playing guitar and singing all night. I'm at a loss for words in our tragic loss of two of the finest people I've ever known. Pamela... the sweetest, most forgiving and caring person, mother and friend whom I've ever known, especially putting up with Cal and I over 36 years. Cal, Pam and Matthew are my family; we have so many fond memories that we'll cherish for the rest of our lives. Cal and Pam were but a phone call away; either would drop, stop and come to assist. Cal and Pam were present when my parents passed in Clarksville and when we buried my Father after Desert Storm at FT Campbell... Always by my side, regardless of their personal sacrifices. I'm still in shock they are gone, but am grateful for God's introduction to Cal, Pam and Matthew; I know they are at His side looking down, watching over all of us. Sorry for the diatribe everyone but I'm not sure I'll be able to compose myself to say anything this weekend. My Brother and his wife are sorely missed. Matt, you have the best of both your parents; you're a spitting image. Son, your Mom and Dad were extremely proud of you as they told me all the time. I love you all! Damon

I knew Calvin from the Church our families both attended through our Jr. High and High school days. He was my partner and co-conspirator in many teen fuled adventures as well as a wonderful friend. While I did not have the pleasure of knowing him much as an adult, I will always treasure the memories of our time as kids and young men. He was always warm, kind, fun loving, easy to laugh and dedicated to his family and friends. My heart goes out to his parents and sister as well as the family of his wife. He was a wonderful friend of our youth, may God bless and comfort you all.

Cal and Pam were the finest! I served in the Army under Calvin during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was that leader that most only dream of being. He always went the extra mile for his troops. He never hesitated to invite me into his home and treat me like family. Until Valhalla Sir!!
