Charles Hackney Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Donald Hackney East Lansing Charles Hackney, a devoted husband, father, and longtime civil servant to the State of Michigan, died Monday, August 3rd, of complications relating to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. He was 67. He is survived by his wife, Frances; his children, Steve, Tim, and Susan; daughters-in-law, Allison and Kendra; grandchildren, Anneke, Teagan, and Avra. Born in Detroit to Mildred and Donald Hackney, Chuck moved to East Lansing after his graduation from the University of Michigan Law School in 1967. He was a committed public servant who served the State of Michigan as an assistant Attorney General for over 40 years. During his legal career, Chuck rose to become the division chief of a number of different sections in the Attorney General's office, including the Elections, Agricultural, Lottery and Criminal Appellate divisions. He is believed to be one of the only assistant Attorneys General to hold the position of division head for five different divisions. He concluded his career as one of the principal attorneys responsible for ensuring the State of Michigan's continued collection of tobacco settlement funds, which are critical to the State's budget. In 2007, Chuck was honored by the local bar association with its annual civility award, recognizing a career of professionalism and courtesy. In addition to his public service, Chuck served as an elder and deacon in River Terrace Church, President of the East Lansing School Board, and as a head or assistant coach to numerous youth sports teams. Chuck was also a regular blood donor, worked on Habitat for Humanity houses, and delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins. He was an ardent bridge player and a steadfast fan of the University of Michigan's football team. In 2006, Chuck was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In 2007, he made the difficult decision to accept the use of a ventilator in order to breathe. Throughout his illness, Chuck received the love and support of family, friends, and the larger East Lansing community. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 7, 11:00 a.m. at River Terrace Church, 1509 River Terrace Drive, East Lansing with Rev. Dr. Clayton Libolt, officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday at the Church from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.. Memorial bequests may be made in Chuck's name to the ALS Therapy Development Institute at www.als.net or the River Terrace Church. The family is being served by the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing.

Sally and I had the pleasure to be neighbors of Chuck for 5 years and it was always rewarding to discuss any topic with him because of the breadth of his knowledge. He was a great husband and father and a good pet owner, walking his dog in even the most inclimate weather. He will be missed by all who knew him, but his memory and example burns bright. Our thoughts are with Fran and the family.

Dear Fran, Steve, Tim and Susan,

Rich sent Chuck's obituary. He was a wonderful person who had the capacity to bless everyone he encountered. When we think of the thoroughly good human beings we have met in life, Chuck is one of the first who comes to mind. . You were so fortunate to have had him as a husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this period of loss and grief. Don and Eleanor Melcer

Chuck got me involved in the Meals on Wheels program for which I am grateful. While we were colleagues, I never had the pleasure of working directly with Chuck. But, whenever I encountered him, he always had a pleasant smile and a kind word. He is truly one of the most civil individuals with whom I have had the honor of meeting. He provided me sage advice when my son was planning to attend college. The world would be a better place with more people like Chuck.

I knew Chuck only in the last couple years of his life, and I never heard him speak. But I saw his great courage and his determination to let his light shine through the darkest of circumstances. He taught everyone about the preciousness of life and set an example of human dignity. It was a privilege for me to meet his family, to witness his love for Fran and the delight he took in his children and grandchildren. His memory is a blessing to all who knew him.

Chuck Hackney exemplified everything good in mankind.
Growing up friends with the Hackney's was a true benefit of living in East Lansing. As a youngster I saw Chuck as a parent but also as a friend. He was one of the "cool dads" taking his children and friends on road trips skiing, to Lake Michigan, baseball games and over to Dexter. Chuck was always generous, patient and caring to all that knew him.
Fran, Steve, Tim and Susan my prayers are with you during this difficult time. Best regards.

I had the pleasure of working under Chuck at the Michigan Attorney General's office for many years. Chuck was a fine lawyer with a keen intellect. He was able to identify the real issue in a case and the ramifications of a particular position we chose to take. He had an eloquent writing style that rose above the common, bland legal writing style that so many lawyers use. His so-called "Hackney phrases" were anything but hackneyed! Most of all, I will remember Chuck as a true Christian who not only cared about others but also personally got involved (regular blood donations, wheels on meals, etc) to make this world a better place. Chuck was a "mensch" (Yiddish for an upstanding man--a good person) who will be missed.

It was a privilege to know Chuck and to call him friend. We spent wonderful vacations with him and Fran and their family, and will cherish those memories. Chuck was such an empathetic, loving person. There was never a better friend to sit and talk with.
During Chuck's career as Assistant Attorney General, he earned the utmost respect from those who were fortunate to have worked with him.

Over the years that we have known Chuck, we not only became close to him, but also his family. Chuck has a wonderful family that was the best support system a man could ask for. He will be remembered fondly and will be missed.

I worked with Chuck in the Tobacco and Special Litigation Division of the AG's office. Almost every morning I would greet him with "hey, what's up chuck" and together we would laugh. After he was diagnosed - his attitude didn't change, his work ethic didn't change, and he continued to smile -- Chuck was a great man and a true inspiration to everyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.

Chuck's passing is a terrible loss for his family, his community of friends and colleagues, and the people of the State of Michgan. He was a marvelous combination of intellect and humanity and his contribution to public service invaluable. He shall be sorely missed, but his example shall continue to inspire for years to come.
