If I'm not mistaken, I believe you are the Clarkins who used to live on Madison St in downtown Lansing approx. 50 years ago, around the corner from the Niver family? We used to love playing with several of you kids, except for the time one of the boys shot me with a BB gun on my behind...Ha! It sounds like your Dad was a good man, and I'm sorry for your loss.

When I moved into the borough to become his next-door neighbor, I met him as I shoveled the snow off his walk. He talked me into Friday suppers at the VFW, and entertained me with stories of his mom and dad, his brothers and sisters, and a few stories about his children, all a mixture of loving and entertaining tales. I've missed him since he moved away. Ridge Avenue is just not the same without him.

I didn't know Hugh very well, but well enough! I met him one cold January night, a number of years ago, while seated at the VFW in Gettysburg. I had my back to the door, heard him come in and proclaim rather loudly, "You must be the guy who owns that FILTHY car from Michigan!" I turned around to see him, and introduced myself. We discovered our acquaintance of a number of mutual friends in the Marine Corps League, including Colonel Lawrence O'Grady, the Tuohys, Gene Owens and others. Then, along with another local Marine veteran, we swapped sea-stories, and attempted to do mortal damage to the supply of alcohol in the bar. It was one of those stories that you can't make up. We parted friends, and unfortunately, I hadn't been able to make it back to Gettysburg since, but I still have some bar tokens, embossed with "Gettysburg VFW" sitting in my drawer, that we never claimed, from that night. It was one to remember.
Semper Fi!
