Jerald Horrocks Obituary

Jerald Horrocks

Jerald Horrocks, born May 11, 1922 passed away April 21 at his home on the farm with family by his side.

Jerald was fortunate to live a long and happy life. A life in which he witnessed the world change in dramatic ways. From a time where he rode a pony to school, and walked behind a horse and plow with bare feet, to a day and age where everyone carries a computer in their pocket.

Jerald met Patricia in 1944. Six months later they were married and they never looked back. They worked together every day for 68 years, an incredible partnership that created a beautiful family and a successful business. Being inactive was never an option, he had decided early on they were going to have a fruitful and happy life.

Jerald was a pioneer of the Lansing business community, the founder of Horrocks Farm Market. He was known to be fair-minded, kind, and generous. He always had kind words for friends and strangers alike. A natural innovator, he pioneered many farming and retail techniques.

His life's work was to ensure the future of his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. That's the most anyone can hope to accomplish.

Jerald was a well-rounded man, accomplished musician, expert golfer, and avid fisherman.

He loved and greatly appreciated the people he worked with and the community he served.

He will be survived by his family who he loved so unconditionally and completely. His wife Patricia Horrocks, three sons Kim (Ana) Horrocks, Scott Horrocks, Kirk (Kay) Horrocks, grandchildren, Brandon (Alison) Horrocks, Autumn Horrocks (Ryan Trierweiler), Abby Horrocks, Adam (Mallory) Horrocks, great grandchildren, Jack and Jane Horrocks, Emily Horrocks, Easton and Everett Stevens, Ocean Horrocks Trierweiler and Hunter Horrocks.

All are welcome for a visitation at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Thursday 12 P.M. until 4 P.M.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

I met Mr Horrock several times in years past at the Lansing store. On the rare week day I would have off I would get up early and go to Horrock's. Always taking my time I'd have some coffee, look around and spend way too much money. My adult children love the store and we all visit often. Mr. Horrock was super friendly and always had a kind word. My heart felt sympathy to the Horrock Family. He was a great man.

Mr. Horrocks was a lovely man. I enjoy going to Horrocks Market early in the morning during the week when the state of michigan employees have one of our little holidays. On 3 occasions Mr. Horrocks was at the Lansing Store when I was there and as I was poking around the store losing track of time he would approach and have a start a conversation with me. I've told many what a lovely gentleman he was. I so love the store as well as my adult children and granddaughter love it also. We will continue to go. It's now a family tradition that we go together. Your family is blessed to have such a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Condolences, Jeanne Lugo and Family

Jerry Horrocks had two sons I worked for at Horrocks Farm Market, back before it grew to what it is today. I am so fortunate that Kim and then Kirk gave me the opportunity to learn about everything gardening - and pay me for it - while we lived in Lansing. Jerry was not directly my boss, but he did what he could to help our family. In many ways, it was my favorite job, and Jerry helped make it so. Best wishes to the whole Horrocks family.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of "Jerry"--what a wonderful & inspirational man. His generosity of not only sharing his flowers & fruit but his time & sweet smiles will be dearly missed. His voice may be silent but the beauty of his spirit remains in our hearts. Prayers/Peace to the entire Horrocks Family-

Jerald was a man to follow his excellent example. He never asked an employee to do something he would not do himself first. I admired him very much. I am proud to say I worked by his side.

I'm honored to be related and to have known this giant of a person. Remembering back in the late 40's at the Lansing City Market. His dad, Jake had the best cider I have ever tasted in the whole United States. Then there was the selling of Christmas trees, and eventually all things led up to that little shack on West Saginaw that turned into that huge special place we all know today. Words do not do justice. A piece of a lot of our hearts has left us. All the blessings possible to Pat, and all the family. Thanks Sir, for making this a far better world to live in.

Being a cousin to his grandson, I have known Jerald since I was a child. Never was there a moment when he was not kind or sincerely happy to see me. Even though I did not see him as much in my adult years, that kindness and sincerity had never lessened. Just a few months ago Jerald was sitting in his store handing out flowers, but still had the time to stop and shake my hand, with a sincere "Hello Randy, how have you been?" It was always a pleasure to talk to Jerald. A wonderful person.

I shop at Horrocks at least once a week, and it was always a blessing to see Mr. Horrocks there smiling, handing out roses or an orange and greeting each person "Hello there, young lady!" Prayers for peace for all his family and loved ones, may the joy of loving memories carry you through this difficult time and keep you until you meet once again when we all get to heaven!!

Kim:
Sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. My memories of your father was during a visit to the Saginaw store with my mother who is 90 and your father addressing her with a hello young lady. It made her day.

I worked for Mr. Horrock in 1996 and he was the best employer i have ever had. He would give all the women who came to the store a flower on Mother's Day and would give out apples to children. He will be greatly missed.

Loved every minute of my 15 years at Horrocks as a floral designer. It made my day when Jerald would stop bye the floral department and give us a hug, and Chat. He will be missed by all. May Pat, and the family be comforted by the memory of the joy that Jerald brought to everyone. Sherry Sawyer

I worked for Jerry and Pat many, many years ago as a young child, bending over for hours picking berries for 2 to 3 cents a quart. This was outside Palo, MI. I also babysat the boys. My sincere sympathy to all of you. God Bless!
