Lois Lund Obituary

Lois A. Lund, PhD.

Dr. Lois A. Lund, long-time resident of East Lansing, Michigan, retired professor and dean in Michigan State University (MSU), died December 19 in New City, NY, after several months of illness.  She was 89.

Dr. Lund was born and grew up in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.  She attended the University of Minnesota, received a PhD in Food Research and Agricultural Economics at that institution, and subsequently served as Assistant Director at the School of Home Economics.  She then became Associate Dean in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics' at Ohio State University.  In 1973 she joined MSU as Dean of the College of Human Ecology and she served in that position until 1985.  From that date to her retirement in 1996 she was Professor of Food Sciences and Human Nutrition.

Dr. Lund was a member of the Board of Directors of CMS Energy Corporation from 1983 to 1997.  Earlier, while at Ohio State University, she was a USAID Executive Visitor to USAID-OSU universities in India and Brazil.  She was a member of numerous professional and honorary organizations and served on an array of advisory boards and councils.

Dr. Lund was passionate about her basset hounds who were more like children to her than dogs.  Her beloved Molly died in October.  She was also very active and supportive of her church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in East Lansing, MI where she regularly attended bible studies, women's groups, and any opportunity to promote fellowship that was offered.  A spiritual woman, she was often found counseling young members and families.

Funeral services will be held in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Suffern, NY, on January 7.  Interment will be in a site near her parents in Thief River Falls, MN.

Dr. Lund is survived by a sister, Louella Gottlieb, Suffern, NY, a brother, Robert Lund of Lexington, MA, a niece, Liisa Warren, of Sloatsburg, NY, who has been her guide and companion during her final months, and additional nieces and nephews and their families in Minnesota and Massachusetts.
