Belen; former Lansing City Council member, businesswoman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and member of the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame; passed away on June 2, 2010 at age 97. She was born in Laingsburg to Christopher and Elizabeth Belen on December 28, 1912, shortly before the family moved to Lansing. Lucile was educated in the Lansing Schools and graduated from Lansing Central High School. She attended Michigan State College, and entered the family business, Belen's Flowers, in the early 1940s. She operated Belen's Flowers for 60 years, and established the Belen's School of Floral Design in 1950. She headed the design school until 1990, teaching hundreds of students from the mid-west and across the country. Lucile was elected to the Lansing City Council in 1955 and served continuously until 1992. She served as Mayor Pro tem, and two terms as Council President. She was elected to the Ingham County Board of Supervisors from 1957 to 1963, which included service as Chairman. She was also a member of the Ingham County Board of Health from 1964 to 1973. She was named to the LCC Business Hall of Fame in 1982 and received the Paul Krone Retail Award. My families thoughts and prayers are with you. Lucile's dedication and service to the City of Lansing was wonderful. She gave so much to so many over the years. I remember her from City of Council were she served along with my Father, Harold Moore. Together they made a huge impact on the City of Lansing and will always be remembered for their contributions in making Lansing a world class city. May the cherished memories you hold in your heart of Lucile help you and comfort you now and forever.

I was one of many young people who worked at Belen's Flowers. That was in the 1960s. I delivered the State Journal to the Belens' home, and I guess that was my interview.

I learned a lot about work, and life, and what it means to be in business. (But not much about floral design from Lucile--she wasn't much of an artist, because she was always in too much of a hurry!) And I think this experience nurtured my life-long interest in politics at the "retail" level--in this case, literally. Belen's Flowers had billboards all over Lansing, and I remember Lucile saying that they didn't really need the advertising, but at election time she had reserved the best places for her campaign ads.

I've had quite a few jobs over the past 50 years or so, but my high-school job with Lucile (and Elizabeth) Belen stays with me as one of the most important.
