Ruth Smith Obituary
Grand Ledge
Ruth E. Smith, 91, of Grand Ledge passed away unexpectedly at home May 14, 2015. She lived a happy beloved life. Born August 1, 1923 in Ionia, MI, Ruth was the daughter of Ralph and Clara (Hawley) Safford and graduated from Belding High School. As a young woman Ruth entered the U.S. Navy 1944 thru 1946 as a storekeeper. After returning home, Ruth met Loren "Bud" Smith and they married June 9, 1947. Ruth worked 19 years as a bus driver for the Grand Ledge school system. She was an active member of the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star #14, Waves Unit 32; volunteered at McLaren Greenlawn Campus for 26 years; avid traveler, golfer and lover of animals.
Ruth is survived by her daughters Sally (David) Smith-McCardle and Susan (Don) Putman; granddaughter, Abby (Jared) Davis, and great granddaughter, Isabella Ruth Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ralph and husband, Loren "Bud".
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 21, 2015 - 11:00 a.m. at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with military graveside services to follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Ledge. Visitations will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, May 20th, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with O.E.S. services to begin at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, O.E.S. #14, Capital Area Humane Society or Eaton County Animal Shelter.
