Sheila Pohl Obituary
Delta Township - Passed away after a short but courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 at the age of 60 surrounded by her family and friends. Sheila was born on March 30, 1958 to Frederick and Gloria (Shaull) Thompson. She attended Ferris State where she earned her degree and began working as the secretary for the Solicitor General's Office of the State of Michigan's Department of Attorney General. She retired to embrace her most important role as a mother and teacher. She served her community of St. Gerard Catholic Church as an active member who was behind the scenes lending a hand and making Rosaries. She assisted with the local homeschool community and was always caring for others. She was an avid reader, who loved fishing and music, and was a great hostess who loved opening her home to friends and family. She is preceded in death by her father, Frederick Thompson and mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Pohl. She is survived by her mother, Gloria Thompson; her loving husband of 32 years, Allan Pohl; her children, Kevin (Lauren) Pohl and Emily (Jonathan) Cordes; her brother, Marvin (Donna) Thompson; her sister Cindy Ray; her father-in-law, Elvan Pohl, and many additional loving relatives and friends.
The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lansing with Rev. Fr. John Klein as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue Friday at the church at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Gerard's Youth Ministry or the St. Vincent DePaul Society- St. Gerard.

Allan, sorry to hear about the sudden loss of Sheila. I will always cherish the conversations we had at the Alpha dinners. I know your family is very religious so I have no doubt that Sheila is looking down on you and your family. I can't imagine losing my wife so I don't know what you are going through. All I can do is pray that your sorrow and grief will be taken away by God and his mercy. Please forgive us for not being at the funeral as we are in Texas for the holidays with our kids and grandkids.

Sheila joined the Appellate Division in the early 1980s and served for almost two decades as Division Head Secretary to four Solicitors General: Bob Derengoski, Lou Caruso, Gay Hardy, and me. As the only secretary, she had the very difficult job of handling all the technical secretarial tasks of a very busy division as well as dealing with the staff of virtually all the other divisions in the office. There was a lot of work, often with short deadlines and high stress, and I will always be grateful that she was so good at her job that I could ignore much of the routine day-to-day turmoil. I trusted her to act independently and correctly. Thanks to her my job was easier and the Appellate Division operated smoothly.
Sheila was extremely good at her job because she worked hard and was dedicated to it and I was sorry when she chose to leave the office, but I know how much she loved her husband and children and I have great respect and admiration for her decision to devote full time to her family and church. Im sure that it was a difficult choice for her, but it was the right one because I know how happy it made her. We didnt have a lot of contact after she left the office, but I had a chance to talk her a few months ago and again saw how happy she still was.
I was saddened to hear of her passing, but glad to see that she was surrounded by family and friends, as she wanted. I will miss her and always think of her with gratitude and fondness.
