Beth, Ben, Elizabeth and Andrew
I do remember well that first meeting with Tom, my wife Lynda's brother, all the special times we had together through our college years, our marriages, our family celebrations, the birth and growing up of our children together, the great times in the Poconos, and on and on. I still laugh about fixing the dent in Stu's new car with a plunger after Tom and I hit it the side with a basketball! Kathy and my thoughts, prayers and love will be with you all today and always. God Bless and forever our Whittam family ties shall remain together.

Beth, as a former Director of the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center, I knew Tom for 5 years and greatly respected both his research and his willingness to help manage the Center. I have very little contact with the Center anymore, but this is a great loss to microbiology and food safety but more importantly to your family. He was a great man that I was privileged to know. My condolences at this time.

To Beth and her family...Beth knows me, the kids, due to distance, really do not (unless it's by reputation from their mom!). That said, your family always inspired me that it was possible for there to really be a family, even when things around me always seemed to indicate otherwise. Tom was an inspiration to me, even though I did not know him as well as his mother (almost 50 years of friendship there, WOW)...because he knew the meaning of family and commitment. Of working hard, but always making time for family and friends. His children are a testament to the hard work he put into that commitment. But he was lucky too; he had Beth. What a friend. Love you all.

I knew Tom while he was here at Penn State through various venues. Our kids went to Montessori together and later swam on the Welch summer swim team. But most of all I enjoyed the years playing lunch time basketball with him. He was fun to play with, never made mistakes and always played with in himself. He also never gave in on arguments or surrendered a rebound. His classic admonition "make the easy pass" is still heard today. He was a great guy, smart with a wonderful sense of humor who obviously so loved his family and was the best father rooster at swim meets ever. The rec hall bunch is saddened indeed. Our thoughts to the Beth, Ben, Liz and Andrew.
