Emma Mercer Obituary

Emma Lou Mercer
Lubbock, TX - Emma Lou Mercer of Lubbock, Texas passed away Sunday February 7th, 2021. She was born in Grapevine Texas to Gartrell and Rosa Daniel. She met the love of her life, Howard Mercer, while attending Highland Park Junior High. They each went to different high schools. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. They were reunited in the toy airplane isle while stocking shelves at Woolworths Five and Dime in December 1942. Howard joined the navy in July 1944 and was shipped to the South Pacific. He returned 2 years later, and they were married on March 1, 1947. Emma Lou was a stay-at-home mom raising three children. Having accomplished that goal, she attended Texas Tech with the vision of becoming a registered nurse. She received her RN from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and her BSN from West Texas State. Emma Lou worked as a surgical nurse, home health nurse and retired in 1992 while working for the Texas Department of Human Resources. She was a gifted seamstress and spent her retirement years quilting and knitting blankets to warm those in need. She was one of the founding members of St. Christopher's Church and faithful member of Second Baptist Church. She was a member of the First Methodist Church quilters and RSVP Comfort Corp. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 72 years, Howard Mercer, sister in law Fredna Clark and her husband WE Clark.
She is survived by her daughter Mary McNally of Dallas, daughter Mandy Wiley (Tom), son Tutt Mercer, Granddaughters Laura Hampton (Darin) and the Reverend Morgan Ladd (Matthew). Grandsons Paul McNally (Natalie) and Sam Mercer. Four great grand children and nieces Carole Graetzel and Lynn Cook.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date in Lubbock, Texas

I worked with Emma Lou for several years at the state agency where she served as an RN. She was a kind, caring person, always upbeat, and was a lot of fun to be around. I'm saddened to hear that she died. Mandy, my heart goes out to you.

Sorry to for the loss of Mrs Emma. I will never forget the day i met her in reference to caring for Mr Howard. It was great meeting Mrs Emma. Thankful for the opportunity to invite me in their home giving opportunity to care for Mr Howard. I will forever keep her in my heart. May God comfort you with peace in such sorrow..
