The family of Gene King will gather to recite the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2021, followed by a visitation from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Mass will be celebrated in honor of Gene's life of 83 years at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Christ the King Cathedral in Lubbock, Texas. He passed on Friday, April 30, 2021. On January 5, 1938, Gene was born to Oscar "Ott" and Willie Dee King in Peacock, Texas. Following his graduation from Peacock High School, he went on to play basketball and earned his degree from West Texas State. There he met and married the love of his life, Mary Nell Boulware on July 8, 1960, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dumas, Texas.
He began his career teaching in Amarillo. He coached basketball and taught at Quitaque where he was named Coach of the Year. He received his master's degree from West Texas State. He then served as business manager in Lockney, Dimmitt, Hale Center, and Seminole.
Gene was very involved in every community, serving as Chamber of Commerce President; President, and a charter member of Kiwanis Club; and helped found both Key Club and Little Dribblers in Dimmitt. In Seminole, he was also involved in the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of TASBO, where he served on several statewide committees.
Gene was always very involved in his church families. He sang in the church choir. He served on the School Foundation board, as well as the Diocese Investment Committee at Christ the King in Lubbock.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell King; their children, John David King, Sue Rita (Layne) Myatt, and Phil (Deborah) King; grandchildren, Tyler (Sheena) Myatt, Ross (Callie) Myatt, Shea (Forrest Robinson) Myatt, Deenie (Sam) Kurtz, Stuart (Sarah) Redding, Nicole (Jonathan) Lowery, Daniel Green; great-grandchildren, Delaney Myatt, Lucy Kurtz, and Emma Redding.
He was preceded in death by parents, "Ott" and Willie Dee King; and sister, Virgie Samford.
