James Britton Obituary

James Britton LUBBOCK-The long goodbye ended for the Britton family on Friday, May 4th, when James Britton succumbed to complications of Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). He was preceded in death by his parents, Bynum and Elnora Britton, and his brother, Robert Britton. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jackie (Wallace) Britton; daughter, Morgan Everett and her husband Mike, and sons, Aidan, Lucas and Noah (Taipei, Taiwan); daughter, Erin Rowton and her husband Michael (Plano, Texas); daughter, Jamie Zertuche and her husband Blue (Irving, Texas); and many cousins and beloved friends. James Jimmy Ray Morgan Britton was born Nov. 5, 1946, in Abilene, Texas. Jimmy grew up in Spur, Texas. He graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in 1965 and from Stephen F. Austin University with a degree in English and theater in 1969. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant as one of the first ROTC graduates of Stephen F. Austin and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Jimmy married Jacquelyn Wallace on Sept. 5, 1976, in Plano, Texas. During the early years of their marriage, he worked for various oil companies, traveling frequently to oilrigs off the coast of New Zealand, before starting Britton Holland Custom Homes with close friend, Jim Holland. In 1986, he was hired by the NMMI Alumni Association, where he served as the executive secretary. During his years at NMMI, he established the NMMI Alumni Trail Ride fundraiser, which continues to this day. In 1998, Jimmy was hired by UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he served as director of alumni affairs and as the special assistant to the president. He retired from UT Southwestern in 2003 and began a new career at PlainsCapital Bank, where he became a senior vice president for private banking. Jimmy also devoted many hours to various community organizations, serving on the board of the Lee Park and Arlington Hall Conservancy and as president of the Turtle Creek Association. After his diagnosis with ALS, he volunteered as a disabilities liaison for the Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium. Jimmy was a proud West Texan and had a small family cattle operation in Dickens, Texas. He enjoyed riding horses, working his cattle, and spending time with family and friends in West Texas. Jimmy grew up in the Methodist church, and in his final weeks made a decision to follow Christ, and joyfully told anyone who would listen to the story of his salvation. A celebration of Jimmy's life will be held at the Britton Family Home on May 12, 2012, from 2 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Association or to the International Mission Board. The Britton family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the Autumn Journey Hospice workers for their loving care of Jimmy in his final days.

We met Jimmy at a UTSW function. He was one of the first people we met before moving to Dallas. We always enjoyed his warm demeanor, hospitality and great conversations. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with his entire family.

I came to know Jimmy as a UTSW resident a few years ago. He instantly struck me as a very kind and well-humored man. I've since done all my banking through PC, and kept up with him at engagments he sponsored for our program. I was always eager and delighted to converse with Jimmy. He represented a genuine warm-heartedness and integrity less commonly seen anymore. I feel he has left this legacy with his business at PC. I wish his family all the best- they should feel extremely proud.

Jimmy was a good friend of ours, and we will miss him. He used to stop by in Tahoka when we lived there, just to say hi. He was a sensitive, caring person, and I know Jesus is using him even now. So glad you are at peace now Jimmy, and out of pain! Love to your sweet family,

to the Britton family. I too was privileged to have known and worked with Jimmy at NMMI and while we were the same age, no matter how we worked it, we were not at theHill together, but our friends all overlapped and it always felt like we had been. Jimmy had that special knack of putting his friends together and it worked all the time. He is missed and served as a great example of courage and dignity. Jimmy we salute you.

Jimmy was a special, special person. He was always so kind to me, and I always walked away knowing more about the world after long conversations with him. His main concern was his family, so may he and God grant you peace that his struggle ended with joy and salvation.

Jimmy faced a devastating disease with courage and grace. In his last months his love for others was returned as friends from distant decades and many miles took time to visit him. Jimmy loved West Texas and New Mexico, loved the history and culture of cowboys, and loved sharing his experiences. Those fortunate enough to know him will miss the warmth, wit and words that made him such a special friend.

To The Britton Family, I offer my sincere condolences on this day. I considered Jimmy to be a close friend and he remained in close contact through these years and visited the family ranch many times during his tenure as the NMMI Assoc Executive Secretary. Jimmy would come spend some time decompressing and talk about his ideas as to how to move the Assoc forward. He was indeed persistent in prodding me to attend Trail Rides and once this took place I was hooked, again my gratitude to Jimmy! Moreover, I had the distinct honor of having Jimmy as my Executive Secretary when I was in the position of President of the NNMI BOD, and I proudly say to all; Jimmy served well, always keeping NMMI and the corps of cadets in the forefront of his mind. Please let Susan and I know if there is anything we can do to help in this time of need. We wish you all God's Speed. George/Susan Mendoza—Mendoza Ranch, San Patricio, New Mexico.

Jimmy was a treasured friend. When we last spoke on Monday, four days before he passed awy, he was concerned about another friend, also very ill. I thought to myself that this is one of the things I loved about Jim Britton, that he cared about his friends to the point of selflessness.

My family knows the heartbreak and devastation of watching a loved one go through the sheer torture of this horendous disease, ALS. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I wrote alumni stories when I first was hired at UT Southwestern and interacted with Jimmy often. He was interesting, thoughtful and funny, with telliing all of his stories. We became friends....
I was sad when he left UTSW.
Very sad for you, his family. I didn't know him well, but guessing that he was a great man...
My thoughts and prayers,

I worked with Jimmy on the Super Bowl as part of the ADA subcommittee. He was such a neat man who was so gracious. I learned so much from him as far as how to work with people that was so much more important than what we were able to do for the Super Bowl. I will never forget him.

It was an honor to work with Jimmy at Plains. What I will always appreciated about him is the way he treated everyone around him. He treated everyone with respect, whether they were 22 or a senior executive. May the Lord give his family piece and comfort during this difficult time.
