Retha Marie Moore
San Antonio, formerly of O'Donnell - Retha Marie Moore, 85 of San Antonio formerly of O'Donnell passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2021. She was born November 1, 1935 in Abilene. Retha graduated from O'Donnell High School in 1953. She attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene from 1953-1955 at which time she transferred to Eastern New Mexico University, where Fred attended school and played football. Retha married Fred Gerald (Fuzzy) Moore on January 27, 1956 at the First Baptist Church in O'Donnell. After their marriage, Retha graduated from ENMU in 1958 with her Bachelor's in Education. She was employed by Central Consolidated Independent School District in Kirtland, NM as a teacher for 36 years from 1958-1994. Retha taught in all elementary grade levels at some point but spent the majority of her teaching years teaching 6th grade. During her summers off, she returned for ENMU for summer semester ad graduated with her Master's in Education in 1972.
Retha enjoyed playing the piano, organ, teaching Sunday school, volunteering for youth leadership and vacation bible school at First Baptist Church in Kirtland, NM. In her later years, she volunteered at a Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center in San Antonio where she would play the piano during Sunday morning church services. Retha was a huge San Antonio Spurs fan, she was a season ticket holder for 11 years, very seldom missing a home game. She also enjoyed playing Hand & Foot with friends and traveling.
She is survived by her son, Fred Michael Moore and his wife Brenda Kay Moore; daughters, Alice Elizabeth Budworth, Julia Marie Moore and her wife Terri Varnado; grandchildren, Brittney D'Shelle Plaisted, Fred Brandon Moore, Meghan Leigh Bridges, Lyle Alexander Goodyear, Aubrey Gerald Bussey, James Colby Bussey and Charles Bradley Bussey; great-grandchildren, Callie Gwendolynn Plaisted, Lillian Page Plaisted, Charlotte (Charlie) Kay Bridges, and Rory Michelle Goodyear.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Alice (Callaham) Gillespie; and by Lena Smith Chiddix; and her husband Fred Gerald (Fuzzy) Moore in 1995.
A visitation will be from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Combest Family Funeral Homes, O'Donnell. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2021 at First Baptist Church O'Donnell with burial to follow at O'Donnell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for memorial donations in Retha's name to be made to the O'Donnell Cemetery Association.
