Robert Brackett Obituary

Robert C. Brackett CHICAGO, Ill.-Robert C. Brackett, D.D.S., J.D., a 1957 graduate of (Tom S.) Lubbock High School (Texas), passed away peacefully on March 11 after a long illness in his home near Chicago. He was 73. Born on July 16, 1939, in Fort Worth, Dr. Brackett attended Texas Tech University before joining the U.S. Army, where he completed a distinguished tour of duty in then-divided Germany. Following his honorable discharge from service, he returned to Texas, attending the University of Houston and the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston. He then completed a periodontal residency and fellowship under Dr. Anthony Gargiulo at Loyola University Dental School in 1969, and followed up the next year with a Master of Science degree in oral biology, also from Loyola. He remained in Chicago, establishing and running a large periodontal practice in Park Ridge and Downers Grove, during which time he pioneered several groundbreaking procedures. His interests were wide, leading him to graduate from the Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1987, with admittance to the Illinois Bar that same year. For several years he practiced both dentistry and law with his dental partner, Robert C. Poulsom, D.D.S. He was a founder of the law firm, Brackett, Poulsom, Bretcher, and Wirth (later Brackett, Poulsom, and Associates). In his law career, at least one of his appeals changed Illinois law. He was one of seven distinguished Chicago lawyers appointed as editors for the debut of Shepard's Illinois Tort Reporter. He also co-authored a chapter in Clark's Clinical Dentistry, and lectured on numerous occasions to medical professionals on medical and dental malpractice. Unsatisfied with the state of dentistry, which he viewed as too reactive, as opposed to proactive, he and Dr. C.A. Amenta founded The American Society of Preventive Dentistry in 1968, which quickly grew to be the largest dental organization in the U.S. Dr. Brackett served as the society's second president. He is quoted in 6000 Words, the 1976 supplement to Merriam-Webster's Third New International Dictionary, as being the first person to employ in print the noun, floss, as an intransitive verb, e.g. to floss one's teeth. All of his years in Illinois failed to disguise his Texas heritage. He unconsciously retained his accent, and wore cowboy boots to work every day. He was friendly, outgoing, absolutely principled and honest to a fault. He enjoyed golf, reading, cars, and growing roses. He was beloved by his patients as well as his legal clients. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Joy; three sons, Eric, Bismarck (Stephanie), and Ken (Sandy) Welsch; daughter, Kimberly Bentel (Rich); brother, Boone (Andrea); mother-in-law, Fran (Cacioppo) Lombardo; seven nieces and nephews; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Boone Jr. and Bess Hudgins Brackett (who was a linotype operator for the Avalanche-Journal in the 1950s). A private memorial gathering is planned. Memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org. He was bigger than life, cut a wide swath, and he will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who were privileged to know him.

Robert was my first love in Tom S. Lubbock High. We were close for a number of years. I still have letters he wrote while in the Army. I can't remember the year he called for a catch up visit About 1970. We talked for 3 hours. I am delighted to learn of his wide spread success, family. He had a full life. So sorry that he had to suffer the desease that took him.

I attended Law School with Bob. He became a close friend with his professor, Judge Dean Sodaro, who was my husband. Dean thought the world of Bob as did I, and his wonderful wife. We lost Dean 22 years ago. I am sorry for any suffering for Bob and his family and I wish them all peace and comfort.

I knew Robert Brackett as a young man...last visited with him prior to a Lubbock High School reunion about 20 years ago. It sounds like he had a good, fulfilling life. Am sorry he had a long illness, for his family's loss.

I will never forget Dr. Brackett. As a fellow attorney, I admired his honesty and dedication to truth. He was the only lawyer I ever met who insisted that his clients submit to a lie detector test, for he would not agree to represent anyone who was not willing to be completely honest. He was kind and generous. His warmth and sense of humor made him a pleasure to be associated with. He had a limitless quest for knowledge, and a stubborn insistence on doing everything the right way. Not one word in his obituary is exaggeration or hyperbole. He truly was bigger than life. It was an honor to have been able to call him a friend.

When I was 37 years old, I was diagnosed with severe periodontal disease. My dentist said that the only guy who might be able to save my teeth was Robert Brackett. What a shock when this large man with a deep and booming voice walked into the room wearing a huge cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He agreed to do the drastic surgery needed but only if I were sincere about following his cleaning instructions every day for the rest of my life. He said that if I weren't the type to keep my promises and was only fooling around that he didn't want to waste his time doing the surgery. I saw a lot of me in him and I knew that I would do what he asked. I really liked him. I always kept the promise I made to him that day. I am now 75 years old and still have my teeth, just as he said I would. I have a list of ten people who made my life a better life, and Dr. Brackett is on that list.

I met Robert in the fifth or sixth grade at Central Ward Elementary/Carrol Thompson Jr. High where he first appeared wearing short pants and cowboy boots. Soon after our meeting he raised his shirt, pointed to a bad scar on abdomen, and declared that his brother had shot him. A scar and boots. The scar was later explained as the result of a ricochet from a handgun Boone accidentally fired down into the floor. The boots inspired our sixth grade teacher, Mr. Gee to call him "Cowboy," a nickname forever shadowing for many who knew and loved him. I have many fond memories of Robert that lead me to celebrate his life. I am greatly sadden by his death. My condolences to his family and other friends.

I went to school with Bob from grade school at Central Ward, Carroll Thompson Jr. High and in Home Room together at Lubbock High School for three years- he was the kind of friend everyone wanted to have and be like- I am proud to say he was my friend

To the Brackett Family, my sincere condolences at your loss. Bob was my teacher at LUDS, a colleague in Park Ridge, and the father of my very first patient in my practice in Park Ridge (Bismark) when he fractured a front tooth. His work in preventive dentistry, Perio of course and the Law made him truely a unique man in our profession. He will be missed on many fronts.

Boone, as you well know he was a legend in many ways, yes even some nefarious, and he was great friend though it has been years since I was occasioned to talk to him through your contact when I was in Chicago for our youngest son's graduation from Navy training. What fond memories in Lubbock with Bracket. Thanks Boone and God bless you and yours remaining.

I was a patient of Dr. Brackett, he was one of the nicest people I ever met. He made you feel at ease and treated you as if he had known you for years. May he rest in peace, he is in God's hands now. My sympathies to his family.
