Robert Sweazy Obituary

Robert Merrill Bob Sweazy LUBBOCK-Robert Merrill Bob Sweazy, 73, of Lubbock passed away on July 5, 2012, in Dallas, of complications following a lung transplant. He was born in Chanute, Kan., on May 11, 1939, to Fred and Mildred Sweazy. He was preceded in death by both parents. He earned both his B.A. and M.S. degrees in biology and chemistry from Wichita State University and went on to receive a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Sweazy came to Lubbock in 1970 and began a distinguished career at Texas Tech University. From 1970-1985, his focus was on teaching and research in the engineering field; he served as a professor of civil engineering and as director of the Water Resources Center and received in excess of $2M in sponsored research awards. In 1985, he became a full-time member of the university's central administration. In 2001, he was appointed Vice President for Research, Technolog y Transfer and Economic Development for the university, and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2005. He received many academic honors, including being named Engineer of the Year by the South Plains Chapter of TSPE in 1990, being appointed to the Board of Directors for the Texas Board of Professional Engineers by Governor George W. Bush in 2000, and being named Professor and Vice President Emeritus of Texas Tech University in 2007. Sweazy balanced his affinity for academics with a commitment to college athletics. While at Tech, he served as faculty athletic representative for 23 years and as chairman of the Athletic Council for the majority of that time. He was named the Faculty Athletic Representative of the Year by the All-American Football Foundation in 1997. In 2009, the Texas Tech Double T Association awarded him the Coach Dave Brown Award for outstanding contributions to Tech athletics by a non-alumnus. His athletic duties extended beyond the university, as he served on numerous committees for athletic organizations. He held the following notable positions: Southwest Conference President, College Football Association Chairman of the Board, NCAA Eligibility Committee Chairman, and NCAA Division I Vice President. He played an integral role in the merger of the Southwest and Big 8 conferences and then served in various positions within the Big XIIConference. Sweazy was a dedicated member, lifetime elder, and past chairman of the Board of First Christian Church. He served on many committees for the city of Lubbock, including the Parks and Recreation Board and the Community Development Advisory Committee. He and his wife Anne served as co-presidents of the Lubbock Assembly Club and as PTA co-presidents at Honey Elementary, Matthews Junior High and Monterey High School. He was also a member of the Lubbock Club Board of Directors. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Anne Sweazy of Lubbock; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Cole Dulaney of Dallas; and his brother, Donald Sweazy of Lexington, S.C. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held Friday, July 13, at 4 p.m. at First Christian Church, Dr. Michael Passmore presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be made to First Christian Church, 2323 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401, or to the Texas Tech Red Raider Club, P.O. Box 45055, Lubbock, TX 79409.

Anne and Suzanne, We didn't find out about this until today. Terry read about it in a Civil Engineering e-magazine.
We are so sorry and saddened. Dear God, thank you so much for this wonderful man and his family. Guide Anne and Suzanne's steps as they begin life without Bob. Surround them with your peace and comfort, grace and mercy. Fill them with hope. You alone know the depth of their grief and pain. You have been there. Heal their broken hearts and surprise them with your love today. I ask these things in Jesus' name, Amen

Going to college to play football and receive an education is one thing...more importantly, however, is forming friendships. I formed a friendship with Bob Sweazy that remains after 55 years. That says it all about the man, Bob Sweazy. A true team mate. His life blessed all that knew him. God bless you, Anne, for staying strong to the very end. You did everything the right way. God bless your family.

Anne and Suzanne
I have wonderful memories of you, Suzanne, as a wonderful Biology student, and you, Anne, as such a supportive parent. You and Bob were so supportive of Monterey all the activities. We will keep you in our prayers. Myrna Parsons

I have many favorite memories of Bob, Anne and Suzanne! I am so sorry for your loss, Anne and Suzanne. Though I have many memories to brag upon, one of my favorites is worth mentioning. I will never forget going to all of the Southwest Conference tournaments with the Sweazys. One year in particular, Suzanne and I got wooed by the Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team. This was the year they made it to the final four, and Suzanne and I were hooked. We went downstairs one evening to get a chocolate chip cookie and the Arkansas cheerleaders painted hogs on our faces and gave us hog hats. We were hooked! Who knew we would get back to our room and get in trouble with Bob, who was the president, representing Texas Tech. It was too funny. He made us wash the hogs off our faces, very understandably. I also got to enjoy 2-1/2 weeks in Hawaii with the Sweazys, and many more years of fun times. Anne and Suzanne, my heart goes out to you both. I like to think of Estelle and Harvey and remember how many good times we had. I love you both, and my prayers are with you!

Anne and Suzanne,
I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was one of those few people in life who truly make a difference - for the better. I will always appreciate him for being willing to "mentor" me and for being so kind to my family. I hope you both know you are in my prayers. I look forward to seeing "Swayz" again in Glory.

Anne, Dr. Sweazy was such a sport. He always seemed to enjoy my corny sense of humor. In his rememberance, I offer this poem that I wrote for him on the May 10th tornadic night before his 67th birthday, entitled:

"Storm 67"
I hear thunder - is it a train?
Lightening strikes - do I smell rain?
Look! It's hailing - no, it's golf balls.
It's a tornado, a twister - let's head for the halls.
Pop, bang, boom, ping! Snap, crack, splash, ding!
Out run it, take cover, get down on the ground. This is the big one - I know by the sound.
Yikes! It's Bob - he's moving our way!
Today is his birthday - the 11th of May.

It was such a pleasure knowing and working with Dr. Sweazy in the Office of Research Services. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bob was certainly a positve messenger for mankind to all that crossed his path. I never knew anyone that could rival his wonderful attitude and inviting smile.
