Walter Snyder Yippy Rankin Walter Snyder Yippy Rankin, 71, of Midland, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2012. Yippy was born October 29, 1940 in Colorado City, Texas. His family lived in Fort Worth until he was nine years old and then they moved to Midland, which was his home for the rest of his life. He attended Midland public schools and graduated from Midland High School. He went on to attend Texas Tech University on an athletic scholarship. At Tech, Yippy played football, baseball, and was also a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated in 1964. Yippy returned to Midland and coached high school football until moving on to the Aetna Life Insurance Company. He eventually became involved in the oil and gas industry. He married Judy in 1967 and became a devoted fan of women's golf and her most loyal supporter. They shared in her career and were fortunate to make many friends and travel the world. They were fortunate to also experience some great moments in sports. One of the great joys in his life was his son, Tuey. Supporting his athletic and life endeavors was of the utmost importance to him. As a young man, he coached numerous youth sports teams and has continued to support young people in athletics in other ways. He passionately loved his family, friends, and all of the dogs that warmed and shared his life. Red Raider nation has lost one of its most loyal supporters. He loved watching his beloved Red Raiders and was an avid college football fan. Yippy loved quail hunting and some of the best times of his life were playing marginal golf with dear friends. In recent years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Yippy was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his son, Tuey Rankin; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; grandchildren, Kendall Anne and Tripp; brother, David Rankin; sister, Dianne Rankin; as well as the extended family of both his and Judy's. Very special thanks to Dr. Roberta Case, Dr. Summer Merritt, Hospice, and Maria Prieto, who were invaluable during his lengthy illness. Also a special thanks to Randye Biggs. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday, February 26, 2012 between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. A memorial service is planned for Monday, February 27, 2012 at 1:00pm at First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Condolences may be placed at: www.ellisfunerals.com. The family would appreciate any memorial donation in his name. Most special to him would be the Texas Tech Red Raider Club, Box 45055, Lubbock, Texas 79409.

Sorry to hear about Yippie. He was an early childhood friend when we all lived on Brunson street in Mifdland in the early 50's. I remember playing baseball with a rolled up pair of underwear for a ball in their living room with him and his brother. Life does pass so quickley. God bless you and your family.

My deepest condolences to the Rankin Family. Some of my happiest memories go back to the early years of our baseball careers when Yippy and I played ball together with his Dad and my Dad as coaches and fans. I am so glad I got to visit with Yippy at our 50th class reunion. We got to reminisce about little league, pony league, high school and college ball at Tech. He will be missed by many. Dear Judy,Teuy, and Jennifer,
I have sorely missed all of you over the last 20 years. It is a sad thing to lose touch with dear friends and then they are gone. I was heart broken to hear of Yippy's passing. He was a God send to me, truly a friend indeed. My condolences to Judy and the children. As long as I live the memory of him will live on. May God strengthen you Judy,Tuey and Rankin family.

I forgot when posting to your blog yesterday my favorite Yippy memory. In 1973 or so at Memorial Park in Houston I accompanied Yippy following you. On Sunday you shot a 32 on the back nine then eagled the first playoff hole to beat Kathy Whitorth. My job was to keep Yippy under control but I failed because I was not under control. I'll never forget, Judy, how proud Yippy was of you.

I always held Yippy in the highest regard. He adopted me as a lowly sophomere when he was a senior. Fondest memory of Yippy is catching a sure homerun off his bat and him hitting me at my next at bat. Loved him like a brother my sophomore year. May he now rest in the hands of the Lord, and hit the next one just a bit higher.

I am saddned to hear of the passing of Yippy Rankin. My fondest memories of living in Midland revolve around the Rankin family. Tuey was my best friend for many years..Yippy and Judy were always welcoming me to their house, even though I could be a handful. Yippy will always be "Coach' to me and I can attest that many of those young boys on the Cardinal Championship team of 1979 have gone on to productive lives in large part to the guidance that Yippy provided. One day we shall meet again in a much happier place. God Bless.
