ANDY WHEELER Obituary

ANDY WHEELER D.W. "Andy" Wheeler, 81, a resident of Henderson, and long-time Las Vegas resident and icon, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 6, 2015. He was born July 11, 1933, in Wichita, Kan. Andy served his country proudly in the U.S Air Force from 1948-1953 and was a true patriot who had great pride in and love for his country. He started his work career as a drummer and had a very special love of music, especially the blues. He loved to sing and dance and it was not unusual to see him air drumming, especially if "Kansas City" was playing. Andy arrived in Las Vegas in 1975 and embarked upon a new venture, Wheeler's RV. He and his wife, Marlene, owned and operated it for 30 years. Following that, Andy retired to their new home and began a full-time career of golf and fishing. He was a larger than life man with a tough exterior which belied the huge heart underneath it. He loved to tell stories and jokes and his sense of humor and booming laughter were a signature part of his persona. Andy was a long-time member of Las Vegas Country Club and SouthShore Golf Club, where he made many good friends and, needless to say, never met a stranger. Andy was a great philanthropist and supported the Mayo Clinic, St. Rose Hospitals, Animal Funds, Henderson Pal, Racing to Recovery Paralysis, Opportunity Village, RVDA Education Foundation and many more. Somewhere in the great unknown, Andy is telling jokes while he putts for birdie and catches the ultimate bass. He will be sorely missed by the love of his life for 42 years, his beloved wife, Marlene; his grandson, Andrew Stevenson (Brenda); great-grandchildren, Talon, Kalila and Brynlee; faithful and loving companions, Buddy#4 and Jack Too; as well as thousands of friends who will always love and remember him with great fondness. Services will be at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City. Gifts and donations may be made to the Wheeler Nursing Fund at St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation, 3001 St. Rose Parkway, Henderson, NV 89052.

Marlene...WOW! what a wonderful tribute to a most remarkable man.
The service was AWSOME and "Andy's Party" afterwards was truly the best. Andy would have been so proud of you for a job well done. You showed everyone...friends and family...how special a person Andy was and everyone showed you...how much he was loved and respected. You my friend should be so pleased with what you gave to Andy as his going away party.
Love to you, Kay

I will miss my uncle deeply. I am so glad to had the opportunity to get to know him better over the past years.I looked up to him as a father figure for advise through times when i needed someone to direct me in the correct direction, and make the decisions concerning whatever matter came along. He would certainly tell me the way it was with no hesitation whatsoever. I am very grateful to him as well as Marlene for all they have done for us . The jokes were never the same and he seemed to have a new one every time i called him. You are already missed Andy and will be for a very long time.
Love ya. (Matt Wheeler - kiddo)

"Hey Babe" .. You are only as good as your information. Low, mid ,upper.. YOUR display area. These are words only a WHEELER alumni would understand and cherish. You gave us a lifetime of knowledge that was priceless. Your presentation was rough at times, but we saw through to the real meaning. We got "IT" Andy and we are are still speaking your word.
I thank you for everything you gave to us at WHEELERS LAS VEGAS RV.. We will carry your message with us always.

I had the pleasure of working for Andy and Marlene for eight years. I practically grew up at Wheeler's RV. They were so good to me. While I was attending university they allowed me to schedule my work around my class schedule. I learned so much from both of them and will forever be grateful to them. Andy always had a joke to tell and that deep laugh was infectious. He always genuinely asked how you were or how your day was going. Marlene I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts at this difficult time. I hope your memories bring you comfort. Love, Jennifer Hedland

Marlene...I only met Andy twice in the few years that I have been at the Nevada State College Foundation...he was always, gentle, respectful and thoughtful in the advice and counsel that he gave to me...I so appreciated his thoughtfulness and willingness to listen...he was a wonderful and loving man, always mentioning how much he loved you...I always wonder why the good people on earth leave too early...please know that Carol and I are uplifting you in our daily thoughts and prayers...with many special memories.

Dearest Marlene,
There are so many photos and each one a special memory of our times with you and Andy. We wanted to put this photo in to show one of many awards given in your names for so many wonderful kind things you did in support of the Las Vegas community.
We had a laugh thinking back at that day going to the library and it was after a knee replacement Andy had, and he had lost weight and even in his feet. His shoes were so big that he shuffled around the floors so as to not step out of the shoes. Always a funny comment by Andy and always had us in tearful laughter!!
Andy will be sorely missed by us all, and the memories will be close to our hears forever.
Love you Marlene and we will be there to celebrate the life of our friend.

Dear Marlene - I have so many memories. I'll share one here: From the first time you and Andy came into my office with two giant Airedales, and Andy said to our receptionist "Will you please get these dogs a bowl of water, it's hot outside!", I sensed it was going to be an interesting experience working together. From the Entry to the Boathouse, front to back, top to bottom, memories galore! I'm so grateful that I had the "experience" of knowing Andy. May The Lord bless you Marlene.

Let's keep Andy Wheeler alive in our memories! He was the best joke teller we have ever met. At first you thought he was just giving you some information. Then, just as he was getting to the punch line, he would start to laugh, show his beautiful grin, and clap his hands together. We will miss our dear friend in Big Bear Lake, California. You see, Andy was bigger than life wherever he went. Our summers won't be the same without hearing him call to Buddy and Jack at about 8 pm to come in the house. Our dear Marlene, we will see you on the 25th of March.
Love, Bunny & George Big Bear Lake & Oceanside, CA.

I feel a great emptiness with the passing of my uncle. I enjoyed every conversation, every joke, every story of my family heritage, and every anecdote. I will fight the urge for months to call Andy, just to discuss an upcoming game, or to pass on the latest joke. God bless you and keep you, Uncle Andy, "I love you, kid!"

Andy was a one of a kind human being. The world is a lesser place without him. I spent enjoyable times with him trying to catch the elusive "lunker" bass. RIP brother. Count Deiro

Marlene, a name you could just never say without following it up immediately with Andy. Words, simple or complex, can not describe the life and love you too shared. A man, a gentleman in every example, literally bigger than life with the heart to support it. Our deepest sympathies to you and your loved ones. As we all know, he is in a better place, but it doesn't fill our selfish desires to spend more time with him. He, along with every aspect of his character and kindness, will forever be missed, but not forgotten.

All our love,

Diane & Dale Ray
