Frank Sain Obituary

FRANK SAIN Frank C. Sain, 86 passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012. Mr. Sain was born June 10, 1925 in Chicago. A 1949 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Mr. Sain saw active duty until 1961 as a Naval Jet Aviator. He resigned from regular Naval service as a LCDR and later retired as a Commander from the Naval Reserve in 1974. During that time, Mr. Sain married his beautiful wife Aug. 6, 1949 and they were blessed with three amazing sons. In 1981, Mr. Sain moved to Las Vegas with his family. Frank Sain was executive director of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority from April 1981 to July 1991. As Chief Executive Officer of a staff of over 270 employees at the time, the Authority operates the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Field Center. The Authority is the principal sales, marketing, and promotion organization for tourism and conventions in the Greater Las Vegas area. Prior to assuming this position in April 1981, Mr. Sain was the president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, Inc. from July 1972 to April 1981. Mr. Sain joined the Chicago bureau in July 1972 from private industry where he was a corporate vice president with Butler International, Inc., in New York City, a New York Stock Exchange company engaged in transportation and technical services. He had varied duties in administration, sales and marketing, and financial and public affairs. Previously, he was the general manager of Chicago O'Hare International Airport during the facility's $155 million reconstruction program from 1961 to 1964. Chairman (CSAE), and past president of the Rotary Club of Chicago. He was named 1980 Outstanding Association Executive of the year by CSAE. Mr. Sain was a member of the Executive Committee and vice president of Special Events of the Boulder Dam Council-Boy Scouts of America, a member of the American Heart Association-Southern Nevada, and a commissioner on the State of Nevada Tourism Commission. Mr. Sain was an active member of many convention and tourism organizations. Survivors include his loving wife, of 62 years, the former Elizabeth Schumacher of Annapolis, Maryland; a brother, Ken W. Sain of Chicago; three wonderful sons, Gary (Pamela), Todd (Vicky), and Chad; as well as six loving grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m., Feb. 15, at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, at Guardian Angel Cathedral, 302 Cathedral Way, 89109. Graveside services will be at 9:20 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City, NV 89003. As an expression of remembrance and sympathy, the family requests contributions to the Destination and Travel Foundation in the name of Frank C. Sain.
