Gus Thiros Obituary

GUS THIROS Gus Thiros went home to be with our Lord on Feb. 18, 2011. He was 89 years old. He passed away at home with family. Gus was born in Pocatello, Idaho, Oct. 20, 1921. His mother, Heleni (Helen) and his father, William (Bill) were Greek and immigrated from Greece and came to settle in a small Greek community in Pocatello. Gus' parents were born and lived in the small Greek village of Diakafto where they eventually married. Later in life, Gus took his family and with other relatives revisited Greece. What a memorable month long trip it was! Gus grew and excelled in life and met and married the love of his live Virginia Parsons, in Malad, Idaho. Their daughters, Tamara was born first; then Heleena (Toni), then their 3rd child, a son, Turkan (Turk). Gus and his wife owned and operated a bar and casino in West Yellowstone "The Lariat Club". It is now a book store. They lived there during the worst winters on record. Eventually moving to Las Vegas, a small western town at that time. Gus became a 21 dealer at the Flamingo Hotel. As time went on, Gus and Virginia purchased the "Bonanza Hotel and Casino" and it became "Gus' Bonanza Club". A successful business. Then an opportunity to move to England and operate the Luxurious Hotel and Casino "The Pair of Shoes". Gus and Virginia remained in England and traveling Europe many years; and eventually became interested in antiques. They returned to the United States the excitement of being around their three grown children and grandchildren. Gus and Virginia eventually moved to Ventura, Calif., and opened a spectacular antiques shop "The Snooty Fox"; owned and operated their shop for over 10 years. Gus and Virginia were also the only certified husband and wife appraisal team of antiques and jewelry. Finally, ready to retire, they liquidated their antiques and relocated back to Las Vegas for retirement. For health reasons, Gus and Virginia's only surviving child, Heleena (Toni) and her husband, David McGee moved them home to Livingston, Mont., to their home to care for them both. Gus lived a full, rewarding, and wonderful life. He was an extraordinarily intelligent and hard working man. He was a wonderful family man. Always giving and helping his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gus loved his Greek food and was a superb cook, and taught his two daughters how to cook Greek food. Gus was preceded in death by his mother and father; son, Turk; daughter, Tamara; and all but one sibling; his brother Ted who is 91 years old and still lives in Las Vegas. Gus leaves behind a wonderful wife, Virginia he dearly loved; his daughter, Heleena (Toni) and son-in-law, David McGee of Livingston, Mont.; grandson, Jayson Pearson of Las Vegas; grandson, Curtis Crandall of Las Vegas; granddaughter, Marlo Cole of Las Vegas and her son, Zachary, their great-grandson; granddaughter, Lisa Humphries, husband, Randy Humphries of Tennessee and their three sons, Cody, Justin and Joshua, their great-grandsons; also beloved nieces and nephews. Gus has imprinted our hearts with Love and we all will miss him so very much. There will be a celebration of Gus' life in the Spring. "Saagápo" Greek for "I Love You".

I thought of Gus today because I saw a news story about the City of Ventura codes on second units--I rented a cute "back house" in Ventura from Gus Thiros from 1994-2005 and wanted to share that he was the BEST landlord ever. He installed a kitchen in the unit and made other improvements for me and was always the sweetest gentleman. We truly enjoyed his visits when he was in Ventura--something most tenants wouldn't be able to say about most landlords! I know this good man is resting in peace now and I will continue to think of him whenever I enjoy Greek food!

To the Thiros family -
I was so sorry to read of Gus's passing in the Star last week. I had the real pleasure of doing roof repairs on the Snooty Fox many years ago, and got to know Gus during the times I was working for him. He was a gracious and kind individual, and I always enjoyed my visits to the store, and listening to his stores about his experiences in Las Vegas. May he rest in peace.

Virgina and Helena,
I was so sorry to hear of Gus's passing. I have so many fond memories of the times spent at your home accross from Crestwood School. I remember Virginia teaching Toni and I how to drive in the Convention Center parking lot and then going to Dairy Queen for hot fudge sundaes. We hope the good memories help you through the sad times. Cathy (Aznarez) Askew and Joyce Aznarez

We were very stunned and saddened to read of Gus's recent death. We remember him from many years ago when he appraised some of our housewares and had the lovely store, Snooty Fox. He and his wife made quite a charming couple. We send our deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

We were so sorry to see Gus' obituary in the paper today. We always enjoyed both Gus & Virginia during their time in Ventura. Lou worked for him in the shop, repairing furniture & building cabinets. When we were looking for a dining room table, he found one for us. It was a beautiful old table, & we still have it. We'll never forget their 2-day Greek anniversary party; it was a blast! Virginia & Toni, we send you our love & deepest sympathy.

Thiros Family,
I was so fortunate to have known Grandpa Gus. I know you all will miss him dearly. Marlo and Zach I could see how much he loved you both. He was truly a warm loving individual. He's still watching over you all from above. I can only dream of being loved the way he loved your grandma. May god bless you all.
