I apologize for this very belated post which is very overdue
Jerry Lewis is my all time favorite Comedian, who was also Director and a very underrated Excellent Actor, often displaying serious dramatic performances in many of his Comedies. In King Of Comedy (Robert DeNiro was blown away by his performance, and it is impossible to not get choked up at the end of The Nutty Professor, when Buddy Love is on stage during his final transformation. That was just Great acting.
He was a big fan of Charlie Chaplin, who also was a big influence on his career, and he even adapted the song "Smile" as his Telethon Theme Song (which was written by Charlie Chaplin BTW). One of his prized possessions was an Original 35 mm print of Modern Times, which Charlie Chaplin personally gave to him as a gift.
As a Director and out of necessity, Mr. Lewis had mounted a video camera and film camera together in order to share the same camera shot. This enabled him to do instant playback the on video tape and he created what is known today as Video Assist, which allows the Director to view a video version of a take as soon as it was filmed.
I ALWAYS looked forward to the MDA Telethons as far back as I could remember, because Jerry Lewis could always make me laugh hard enough to cry and nearly stop breathing most every time. I waited eagerly and impatiently for his impromptu comedic moments and performances when you would least expected it, in between and sometimes during the entertainment segments and sponsor donations.
The Tributes have been and will continue to be justifiably overwhelming from everywhere throughout the Entertainment world, and will look to inspire Special Tributes during the Oscars, Emmy's and countless other entertainment venues.
He truly was an Entertainment Icon, who inspired countless Comedians, and I can literally go on and on and on about his Talent and what he meant to this world, and to me personally. I was fortunate to acquire a personally autographed copy of one of his books. I wish I had met him in person, but I think he would tell me that I would know him best by being his Fan, by watching and appreciating all the films and performances of his Lifetime of work, because he put all of himself in everything he did - including raising over $2.6 billion in research donations to fight Muscular Dystrophy and the MDA National Chairman.
When Jerry Lewis passed away, it was a very very sad day for me, his other many many Fans, and the Entertainment Industry. My sincere condolences to the Family, Friends and Fans of Jerry Lewis and may he Rest in Peace, Amein.
