JOHN PRETTO Obituary

JOHN PRETTO July 25, 1933-Nov. 12, 2015 In the early morning hours of Nov. 12, 2015, John Italo Pretto, known by many as "Doc Pretto" or "Doctor John," passed peacefully, with his five adoring children in attendance. His spirit and accomplishments are mirrored in those who carry his legacy. His firstborn, Charles Joseph, has already assumed the caring patriarchal stewardship of the Pretto family. Furthering John's lifelong love for amateur photography, model rocketry and civic leadership. Charles is joined by his wife, Kimberly; son, Anthony, and his new bride, Mariangela "Cookie;" and daughter, Liza. His precious daughter, Mary Kay, is imbued with John's charitable spirit and care for humankind. She fosters John's love for private piloting, family gatherings, car rides and reminiscing. Mary is supported by her sons, Ian and Shane. Middle son, Robert Stephen, shares in John's passion for the practice of medicine and radiology. Telling all that will listen, that his father was the best radiologist he has ever known. Bob gains John's appreciation for lifelong scholarship, musty textbooks and appreciation for rural Nevada. Bob is joined by his wife, Lea; and sons, Stephen and Vincent. John Giovanni, son number three, first to be born in Las Vegas, has keenly adopted Dr. John's mechanical ingenuity and love for electronics. Johnny best reflects Dr. John's enjoyment for social commune, laughing with friends and red wine. Johnny is shadowed by his son, Gianni. Joseph Jude, or expressively, Joe! combines most clearly those features beloved in Dr. John. Namely patience, a disarming smile and generosity. Baby Joe's love for collecting will provide a lasting home for Dr. John's most important memorabilia. Joe's warm embracing handshake will remind most of Papa John. Joe accompanies Anne Jean Pretto. Anne partnered with John to create a most loving and nurturing home for said progeny in Las Vegas for more than 25 years. John Italo was born, raised and educated in the "Land of Lincoln." He carried a life-long love for all things Illinois. Proud graduate of the University of Illinois for both undergraduate and medical degrees. He then completed a medical internship at Cook County Hospital and residency in radiology at University of Illinois-Chicago. John practiced radiology in southern Nevada for nearly 50 years. Touching lives at Sunrise Medical Center, St. Rose de Lima Hospital, Pretto Diagnostic Imaging and West Valley Imaging. His tenure at Boulder City Community Hospital returned him to a lifestyle he always cherished. This beloved city reminded him most of his small town roots. He and long-time companion and confidant, Karen Knisley, enjoyed an active life and many friendships for 30 years in Boulder City. In addition to Karen, John was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Susie; and sister, Marie. The family welcomes all to celebrate John's life well-lived. Visitation, memorial Mass and luncheon reception will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1399 San Felipe Drive, Boulder City. A private graveside service will follow. It was a sad day for me as I read Johns obituary. He was a dear sweet man. I thought very highly of him. My husband Jack McClary worked for John as I also did doing insurance. Jack worked with him at Sunrise hospital and also so his office on Vegas Valley drive. We traveled to Japan and to Europe with him looking for equipment. Those were some special years for us. MY condolences to your family. Louise McClary Bennett.

John and Dr. Williams picked me up at the airport January 3,1969. Since that day we have been good buddies. Ann and John welcomed me into their home to join their wonderfull family. I shared many great meals with John, Ann and their young family. Soon thereafter I introduced them to my girlfriend and now wife of 44 years, Mary. John inspired our lives with his friendship, love, compassion, caring, loyalty and honesty. John was very special to us and we Ioved Him deeply. We will always cherish our Fun times together.

I will always remember strolling down Fremont Street wearing our bib overalls! We had so many great laughs and no significant bumps in our our 60 year friendship. If people could laugh as much as you and I did when we were together, the world would be a lot more fun! You already have become one of my greatest memories that recurs many times each day. Have a smooth ride and save me a seat...."Tex"

I worked as an x-ray tech. with Dr. Pretto at Sunrise hospital from the early 60's until 1971. I so fondly remember him for his caring and compassion for the patients and also his employees. I remember his excitement when he was the proud owner of one of the first microwave oven in town, and how he raved about cooking a baked potato in it. We had many laughs during our working time together and socially after. Prayers to his family.

I have vivid memories of Uncle John while I was growing up. I remember the first time he came to 1111 Walnut St. We all loved him at first sight. He came up with clever games for Artie, Mike, Danny, Nancy and I to play and would even give the winner a dollar! He was very, very smart and loved working on cars with his friend & neighbor Lee. He fixed my old car numerous times. He would always get us into the best shows and we had the best seats. The maitre de would look at his list and say "oh Dr. Pretto, yes, come this way." We saw many stars that way-- Elvis, Sammy Davis Jr, Buddy Hacket, to name just a few. My Mom & Dad worshipped Dr. John. He was always so kind, caring and generous to them. We all remember how he flew the whole family out to Ottawa in his Cessna one summer. He was fun to be with and everyone loved him. He will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on through his five wonderful children, my cousins. May God grant him eternal rest and wipe away the tears of all of us who will miss him dearly. Dr.Pretto was so kind to patients and the staff at Sunrise Hospital that even though I worked with him in the 70's I still remember his compassion for patients in pain and especially the terminally ill.A life well lived- devoted to others. God give you rest and welcome you home.

Our family will miss our best neighbor for over 25 years. When Deanna & Joseph were volunteers at Boulder City Hospital he took the time to teach them how to read x-rays. Every Halloween they came home with a huge candy bar from trick or treating at Dr. Pretto's house. When serving in the Gulf War I got updates on how he would come over to see if my family needed anything. He sent a care package which included pictures of my family.
These past few years it was time for me to be a good neighbor, taking John out for our local off-road desert trips. John and I would go exploring looking for the perfect meal and milk shake. He had a charm that anywhere we went John made a friend. He truly will be missed.

Chuck, Mary, Bobby, Johnny & Joey,
My deepest, deepest sympathy on the passing away of your beloved Dad. I have such wonderful memories of him. He was a great friend to me and my family while they were growing up. He was very funny & witty and loved to make fun of my Irish accent. He loved flying his plane and took me for a ride once. I was scared to go until your Mom, Ann convinced me that he was a great pilot. Now he is in Heaven with his Mom & Dad and I bet his Dad is showing him all the clocks that he has fixed in Heaven and they are playing a good game of chess.
Love, Betty Lamy

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Pretto's passing. What a great man! I can see him driving a tractor in the Boulder City Christmas parade and always smiling. He was such a dear. That smile will always be what I remember.

To the Pretto family, the beautiful obituary reflects what a fine father he was. My family shares in your sadness of the loss of him, but also rejoices in his well lived life. I have such great memories of Dr. Pretto as he was always so warm and ever welcoming of all of Bob's and Johnny's friends forever hanging out at your house on Latigo. Sometimes for days, (Although the skeleton in the living room used to scare me).
With Love,
