Michael Opsitnik Obituary

CWO4 MICHAEL OPSITNIK U.S. Coast Guard, Retired Michael Opsitnik, 91, of Las Vegas, passed away Jan. 12, 2010. He was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Struthers, Ohio, and was a 12-year resident of Nevada. Michael celebrated 54 years of marriage with his beautiful wife, Ida. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard and honorably served during World War II and the Korean War. With 30 years of distinguished service, he was meritoriously decorated with numerous commendation medals and eventual promotion to chief warrant officer CW4 gunner. Mike was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, as well as the California Rifle and Pistol Association. He was also a benefactor of the NRA, and served as president of the Silver State Chapter of Chief Warrant Officers. His many achievements included actively participating in the establishment of a distinctive USCG memorial at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Mike and Ida were avid travelers and ventured to Europe and Mexico. Their travels were highlighted with a 90-day worldwide cruise. Mike was a devoted husband and a great mentor to many and generous to a fault. He will be sorely missed by those who had the honor to know him. Michael is survived by his wife, Ida; as well as several nieces and a nephew in New York. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the chapel at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City, NV 89005. Interment will follow with full military honors.

Dearest Ida,
At this moment I wish I were very wise, that I knew some magic word that could exorcise the pain of such deprivation as yours.
Alas! I am not wise, and I know no such word. One of the most consoling
sentences I ever read, was long ago by Socrates:
'No evil can happen to a good man,
either in life or after death.'
I am absolutely certain of very few things in this world, but I believe that profoundly.
Mike was a hell of a guy.
...
You and his many friends were saying, "there he goes"...
God and thousands of beings were saying, "here he comes!".
---
I was not aware of Mike's WW-II background. Impressive! And I never told him, "thank you for your service!" This city has lost a jewel,
and the cemetery has added another hero.
---
God bless you and your family.
Sincerely, David Kimes
