Patricia Vander Griend Obituary

Patricia Jackson Vander Griend, 53, of Poway, Calif., passed away Jan. 13, 2005. She was born Aug. 14, 1951, in Eugene, Ore. Patty Jackson was a long time Las Vegas resident since 1953. She attended local schools, graduating from Bishop Gorman High School in 1970, and was a member of the high school band. Patty earned her BA in History with a minor in political science from UNLV in 1974. Patty was an avid orientalist and an expert in Chinese literature. Patty was always an active member of the Democratic Party. In 1976, she was a delegate to the Clark County and State Democratic Party conventions and attended the National Democratic Convention working as a Page. She was active in the League of Woman Voters and many charitable organizations. She worked in various casinos including the Royal Inn and El Cortez Hotel. She worked as a librarian for Clark County in Las Vegas, and most recently employed by the San Diego School District as a librarian in Poway, Calif. She was a kind, generous, and intelligent woman who will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her mother, Susan Jackson of Las Vegas; her loving husband, Ronald Vander Griend; daughter, Jacqueline Vander Griend; son, Paul Vander Griend, all of Poway, Calif; brother, Terrence M. Jackson; sisters, Kathleen Fox of Las Vegas and Penelope Porter of Rochester, Minn; cousin, Margaret Mary Rosinski; a niece and many nephews. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, 14557 Springvale Road in Poway, Calif. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA, 92103-1407.
