Berta Morton Obituary

Berta Morton
Gray, Georgia- Berta E. Morton, 98, died Friday, August 11, 2017, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 3:00, Sunday, August 13, 2017, in the historic Gray United Methodist Church with interment at Highview Cemetery in Gray. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Susan Roberta Elizer, the only daughter of James Marshall Elizer and Rosa Lee Ezell Elizer, in Hillsboro on September 25, 1918. A graduate of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, she taught in Burke and Wilkes counties before coming to Gray in 1942. She taught about 1,000 first graders to read before her retirement from the Jones County School System in 1974 after thirty-five years of teaching. Her husband of thirty-seven years: J. Harris Morton, who served as Jones County Probate Court Judge, preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Morton traveled widely in the United States and in Europe and excelled in making many needlework and clever craft projects, most noted for her meticulous miniature scenes in eggshells.
When her eyesight failed in 2008, she moved from her home to Stone Brooke Suites, where she continued to participate in every activity not requiring sight. She persuaded the minister of Gray United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, to arrange a weekly Sunday School lesson for the residents at Stone Brooke.
Mrs. Morton is survived by her nieces: Marcia E.(Don) Floyd of Covington and Robbie E Piper of Terre Haute, Indiana; Charlotte E.(Richard) Parsons of Jefferson City, Missouri; nephew: Lee H.(Jeanne) Elizer, Jr. of Florida and a special niece-in-law: Marguerite M.(Bobby) May of Gray.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Berta Morton Endowment Fund, Gray United Methodist Church, 117 South Jefferson Street, Gray, Georgia 31032.

In surfing the internet I came across this obituary of my cousin Berta Morton. She and my dad, Henry Morton were 1st cousin I do believe. When we were kids we would always come to Haddock to visit my grandmother, Pauline Morton and aunt Frances Morton. We always went to see COUSIN BERTA..she always had us some fresh peaches.

Marguerite May, I am sorry I was out of town and just learned of "Miss Berta's" death. I had stopped to see her a few months ago. She was such a dear person to me and the school system.

So sad to hear of me Berta passing, she will always be a legacy here in Jones county. What a great blessing that a wonderful woman as her lived to be 98. God was very good to her. Praying for her family and friends during this difficult time.

Ms. Berta taught so many children to love school, and the love of learning that she instilled remained with us throughout our lives. She was a blessing to all who knew her.

Mrs. Morton was one of the most important influences in my life. She encouraged curiosity in a safe and nurturing environment, and she helped shape who I became in life. I was terrified of that massive place and all those strangers when I entered Gray Elementary that first day, but Mrs. Morton gave me the strength to stay, and nourished a passion that led me to remain in school to this day. And not only have I always remembered her, but she always remembered us, her students. While I was away in grad school, while I was off exploring the farthest reaches of the world, and as I built my own career as an educator in several universities, she would always ask my mother about me. I hope she knew how deeply appreciated her special kind of love was, and what a profoundly important influence she was in so many lives. I will remember you always, Mrs. Morton. Rest in peace.

Mrs. Morton was my supervising teacher during student teaching. She was a wonderful lady, excellent teacher, and friend. She will be missed by so many.

I came to Gray to teach in 1963. She was an encourager and a loyal friend since that time. The world is a better place because of her. Rest in peace, my friend.

Heaven gained a sweet lady. She set so many young minds on the path to learning (including mine) and will always remember her and be grateful for her.
