Paula Morton - Arnold
June 21, 2018
In surfing the internet I came across this obituary of my cousin Berta Morton. She and my dad, Henry Morton were 1st cousin I do believe. When we were kids we would always come to Haddock to visit my grandmother, Pauline Morton and aunt Frances Morton. We always went to see COUSIN BERTA..she always had us some fresh peaches.

Marguerite May, I am sorry I was out of town and just learned of "Miss Berta's" death. I had stopped to see her a few months ago. She was such a dear person to me and the school system.

So sad to hear of me Berta passing, she will always be a legacy here in Jones county. What a great blessing that a wonderful woman as her lived to be 98. God was very good to her. Praying for her family and friends during this difficult time.

Ms. Berta taught so many children to love school, and the love of learning that she instilled remained with us throughout our lives. She was a blessing to all who knew her.

Mrs. Morton was one of the most important influences in my life. She encouraged curiosity in a safe and nurturing environment, and she helped shape who I became in life. I was terrified of that massive place and all those strangers when I entered Gray Elementary that first day, but Mrs. Morton gave me the strength to stay, and nourished a passion that led me to remain in school to this day. And not only have I always remembered her, but she always remembered us, her students. While I was away in grad school, while I was off exploring the farthest reaches of the world, and as I built my own career as an educator in several universities, she would always ask my mother about me. I hope she knew how deeply appreciated her special kind of love was, and what a profoundly important influence she was in so many lives. I will remember you always, Mrs. Morton. Rest in peace.

Mrs. Morton was my supervising teacher during student teaching. She was a wonderful lady, excellent teacher, and friend. She will be missed by so many.

I came to Gray to teach in 1963. She was an encourager and a loyal friend since that time. The world is a better place because of her. Rest in peace, my friend.

Heaven gained a sweet lady. She set so many young minds on the path to learning (including mine) and will always remember her and be grateful for her.
