Rev. Cecil G. Irwin Sr.

Rev. Cecil G. Irwin, Sr. -ROANOKE, VA - Rev. Cecil G. Irwin, Sr., of Roanoke, VA, died September 25, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Salem, VA. -He was the son of the late George Ernest and Ruby Shugart Irwin, graduated from Unadilla High School and served in the U.S. Navy including 13 months in Korea. He graduated from Mercer University and received his Master of Divinity degree from South Baptist Theological Seminary. Rev. Irwin had specialized training in pastoral care, religious and mental health, grief counseling and alcohol treatment. He served churches in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Crystal Springs Baptist Church in Roanoke where he was a member at the time of his death. Rev. Irwin served four years on the Georgia Baptist Convention's Executive committee, four years on the Kentucky State Baptist Executive committee and two years on the Committee of Committees. He also served on the board of the Mental Health Association in Roanoke for six years and was actively involved in several civic organizations in different states. -He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Irwin of Roanoke; a daughter, Vicki Smith of Landenberg, PA; a son, Cecil Irwin, Jr. of Fairfax, VA; a sister, Martha Bashaw (Donald) of Unadilla; two brothers, Billy H. Irwin (La Rue) of Perry and James R. Irwin (Brenda) of Unadilla; three grandsons, Greg Smith, Brady Irwin and Nicholas Irwin. -His sister, Ernestine, preceded him in death. -A memorial service will be held at 11A.M. Saturday, October 17 in First Baptist Church of Unadilla with Rev. Chad Massey officiating. Rev. Irwin will be laid to rest at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. -Oakey's Funeral Service and Crematory, South Chapel of Roanoke, VA had charge of arrangements.
