Cornelius Nugteren Obituary

Maj Gen Cornelius Nugteren, USAF (Ret.)
February 7, 1928 -
August 24, 2017
Warner Robins, GA- Major General Cornelius Nugteren, 89, of Warner Robins passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017. General Nugteren was born on February 7, 1928, in Colton, South Dakota. After graduation from high school in Marion, SD, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Central College in Pella, Iowa, in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in January of 1952, and received his commission as a second lieutenant in March of 1953, through the aviation cadet program. In 1956, General Nugteren married the love of his life, Liane Albrecht.
Among the many highlights of a distinguished military aviation career, General Nugteren served as the Commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center from 1982 to 1988. During this time, he was instrumental in building a first rate Museum of Aviation, an institution that has become an icon in the local community. Additionally, while serving in that position, General Nugteren helped to establish the Mercer University School of Engineering.
In addition to the many honors bestowed upon him during his career in service, in 2004, he was inducted into the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame. General Nugteren, however, felt that the most meaningful award he ever received was the prestigious Order of the Sword which was bestowed upon him by the men and women of the enlisted corps. After proudly serving his country for 36 years, the General hung up his blue suit in 1988. He went on to become the Senior Advisor to the Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC) from 1996 until 2015.
General Nugteren is survived by his wife, Liane Albrecht Nugteren, of Warner Robins, Georgia; daughters, Cecile Nugteren Ross (Mike) and Aneli Nugteren (Steve Place); grandchildren, Eric Ross, Marli Ross Muller (Dylan), and Remy Place; brothers, Marion Nugteren (Katie), John Nugteren, Don Nugteren (Carol), and Jim Nugteren (Jannette).
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, August 31, 2017, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at McCullough Funeral Home. Memorial services celebrating the life of General Nugteren will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, September 1, 2017, at Christ United Methodist Church. Following the memorial service, General Nugteren will be laid to rest at 2:00 pm in Andersonville National Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Warner Robins Museum of Aviation, 1942 Heritage Boulevard, Robins AFB, Georgia, 31098 or Christ United Methodist Church, 511 Russell Parkway, Warner Robins, Georgia, 31088 or to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030,
