Glad I got this reminder about Miss Hurley. Had the privilege of working with her at the Washington Memorial Library when I was a teenager. We young folks knew we were loved and supported. What a great lady!

Miss Hurley was my principal at Alex III for 7 years. She was also a good friend of my mother, who taught there. I was an office aide for her and ran the school book store every morning. She was a wonderful lady.

ELEANOR WAS MY COUSIN AND DEAR FRIEND. HER NAME, ELEANOR, IS MY MOTHER'S AND MY DAUGHTER'S. HER SENSE OF HUMOR AND HER INTELLIGENCE WERE UNIQUE. I KNOW SHE WAS A WONDERFUL TEACHER AND PRINCIPAL AS WELL AS A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING. I THINK OF HER WITH MANY SMILES AND A FEELING OF WARMTH. BON VOYAGE, DEAR ELEANOR.

"Aunt" Eleanor...Didn't get to know you til later in life when you'd come to lunches at Hurley Electric Company on Wednesdays. Very few people were ever invited to those lunches but you had a standing invitation each week. We all loved the bantering between you and Dad(Robert Hurley). It was always fun to see who'd "win" that week over whatever y'all were talking about. Well, when Dad greeted you in heaven, I'm sure he smiled and told you YOU WON with those ugly dog/cat figures you gave him. Those things still make me laugh when I visit the family in Florida.
Love You,
Patn. Hurley Hess

Miss Hurley was my 7th grade teacher 1946-47. She was truly of the "old school" and made very sure that all her students learned, were respectful. She was a fine person and I saw her a few years ago and we visited - she even remembered me after all those years.

Just happened to read the Macon paper on line( I live in Augusta) and saw that Miss Hurley had died. I remember her so vividly and always thought she was someone to be "respected and perhaps feared" but a wonderful Principal. We sure could use more Public School principals like her. I send my sympathy to her family.

I workd with Ms. Hurley at the Washington Memorial Library when I was in high school. She bonded primarily with us students workers and it was clear that she loved young people. That was a long time ago, but I still think of her fondly. She was one of the sweetest people I've ever met! Bill Tanner

I lived seven years of my childhood with the constant fear ( with some relief during summer vacation) of being sent to Miss Hurley's office. Getting to know her as an adult, however, I have realized what a positive influence she had been on all of us who passed through Alexander III in those good old days. We should all be grateful.
