Ellen Jackson Salter Hearn

Macon, GA- Ellen Jackson Salter Hearn, 97, of Macon Ga. passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Carlyle Place. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hart's at he Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210. The Reverend Richard Lanning will be officiating. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service. Ellen will be buried with her husband, Richard L. Hearn at Andersonville National Cemetery in a private family service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 13386, Macon, GA 31208
Ellen was born December 20, 1920 to Thomas Hardy Jackson and Alberta Johnson Jackson in Jacksonville, Georgia. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Larkin Hearn, son David Salter, her beloved daughter-in-law, Donna Buck Salter, brothers, Hardy Jackson, Roy Jackson, and sisters, Millie DeShazo, Ruby Rush, Ethel Martin, and Frances Calhoun.
Ellen graduated from Workmore High School, attended South Georgia College and graduated from Mercer University. She was an elementary school teacher, serving in the Waycross, Albany, Tifton and Macon school systems. After retiring from teaching, she spent her time caring for her family and tending her beloved flower garden. Always the schoolteacher, she insisted on proper grammar and never hesitated to correct a mistake.
Ellen will be remembered for her quiet, sweet, gracious southern manner and for her deep love and devotion to her family. She will be missed by many.
Ellen is survived by her son James F. Salter and his wife Melodie, of Hiram Georgia; grandchildren, Jessica Smith and husband Hunter, Benjamin Salter and wife Jeal, and Kelly Salter, all of Macon, Mischa Jones and husband Sean of New Castle, Colorado; great-grandsons, Seth Salter and Dillon Jones; sisters, Martha Andrews of Jacksonville, Florida, Sara Davis of Tifton, Georgia, Betty Webb, and husband Morris P. of Valdosta, Georgia. and JoAnn Preston of Greensboro, North Carolina; step-daughter, Janet Hearn of New Orleans Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her "adopted" daughter and devoted friend, Margaret Clay, also survives her.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude for the tender loving care provided by Dr. Charles Ridley and her devoted caregivers, Bessie Allen and Justine Ferguson of Home Instead, and Stephanie Branch of Carlyle Place.
