George Shoffner Obituary

George Michael "Mike" Shoffner -MACON - George Michael "Mike" Shoffner died unexpectedly Sunday, July 12, 2009 after a brief illness. Dr. Shoffner was born in Danville, Virginia on June 12, 1945 and received his primary and secondary education there. He celebrated life for one year at William and Mary before serving three years in the United States Navy. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia where he received a degree in physical therapy. He moved to Macon, Georgia in 1977 and worked at The Neurological Institute as an electromyographer for five years. In 1982 he entered the Medical College of Georgia and four years later graduated number one in his Medical School class. He also received the Physician's Physician award, the doctor the classmates would most like to have as their own physician, an honor rarely awarded to the number one person in the class. He remained in Augusta for four more years completing his training as a neurologist and returned to Macon in 1990 as a partner at Neurology Associates. He was a member of The Bibb County Medical Society, American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, Director of the Columbia Coliseum Rehabilitation Hospital, Idle Hour Country Club and Vineville United Methodist Church where he was a devoted member of the Allen Sanders Fellowship class. -He is survived by, in Mike's words, four exceptional and beautiful women; Phillipa his wife of thirty-six years, his daughter Barbara (Todd) Mackintosh, Emily (Josh) Henry and his beloved granddaughter, Britton. He often stated that two of the happiest days of his life were the wedding days of his two daughters, and his greatest accomplishment was marrying Phillipa. Mike was predeceased by his parents, James Philip Shoffner, Jr. and Georgia Kathleen Bass Shoffner and by his brother, James Philip Shoffner III. -Like his father before him, Mike was a master craftsman and constructed many beautiful pieces of furniture, most of them adorning his daughters' homes, providing small monuments to his skill. Mike never lost his passion for the sea he acquired in the Navy and was able to spend the last two weeks of his healthy life with his family and friends sailing his boat off Amelia Island. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, an enthusiastic grandfather, and a superb physician. He was also respected by his peers, loved by his patients and revered by his staff and partners. -The family will greet friends on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Hart's at the Cupola. Services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11:00AM at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Marcus Tripp officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204, the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 409410, Atlanta, GA 30384-9410, or to a charity of the donor's choice. -Online register is located at www.hartsmsort.com. -Hart's Mortuary and Crematory at the Cupola is in charge of arrangements. Mike was a wonderful person and doctor. He was my classmate in medical school. Years later he happened to be on call when my mother was admitted with encephalitis. I knew she was seeing the best and he took excellent care of her. Was so sad to hear of his passing. A great person was lost.

Dr. Shoffner was the best Doctor I ever had, He did more for me than any Doctor before him .....I have yet to find a Doctor that could even come close to the excellent care he showed his patients. He is missed

January 12, 2011

I just received the list of MCG graduates for our 25 year class reunion and saw that Mike had passed away. Mike was one of the nicest guys in our class and such a wonderful person. When my mother who lives near Macon developed encephalitis years ago, I was fortunate that Mike was the neurologist on call. He took excellent care of my mother. I had complete faith in him. I am so sorry that I did not know sooner. He touched many people and will be so missed. I am so sorry for your loss.

October 14, 2009

Today I received a letter from Neurology Associates dated July 17, 2009 stating how saddened the office was by the sudden loss of Dr. Shoffner. I was in a state of shock; I immediately called Carol to find out what had happened. Here is it, October 14, three months after his passing and I just found out. To his family and co-workers, I offer my sincere condolences. Dr. Shoffner had been my neurologist for ten years. He was, without a doubt, such a kind and sweet man who always made me feel very welcome and never seemed to be in a hurry to get me out. He loved his family and always had a sparkle in his eyes when he spoke of them. I remember running into him one summer at Firehouse Subs and him hugging me and checking on me to make sure I was taking my medicine! Today when I spoke with his nurse Carol, she asked me to be thinking about which dr. I would like to see at my next f/u, I felt numb. Going to his office will never be the same for me. May God continue to comfort his family and friends with peace during the most difficult moments. He will be greatly missed and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to know him for the ten years I did. Peace be with you....

I just found out about Dr. Shoffner's death. I was a new patient of his. He was funny and kind and made me feel comfortable- all of these qualities are hard to find in a doctor! He went out of his way in finding me assistance that I needed. For that, I am grateful. Thank you, Dr. Shoffner! You will be missed!

Flip,

Over the past several years I have often thought about you and Mike. About a year ago I went hunting online (to no avail) to see if I could find an e-mail address or phone number to contact you all.

You always mentioned that it was because of me that you and Mike got together. It was one time that luck of the draw was truely fortuitous. That first date you all had was one of the most fortunate decisions I ever made. I always felt that you two were a perfect match.

I am really saddened with his passing and from one who grew up with Mike (a really good friend) please know I wish the very best for you and yours.

To the Shoffner family, I am deeply saddened to learn of Mike's passing. I went to school with Mike for 12 years and remember him vividly in high school. He was outgoing, friendly and admired by his classmates. I talked to him at our last H.S. reunion and I recall our conversation about his living in Macon and about his family. My sincere condolence to his family.

Phillapa, the news we just received of Mike's death is such a shock, and so soon after receiving the beautiful flowers for my mother's service. My mom and dad loved Mike's parents and we "kids" grew up just around the corner in Danville, Virginia. As I read the note's sent by others who knew him as a doctor, it is obvious that he was highly respected and very well thought of.Please accept my sympathy.

I ran in to Dr. Hope today and was shocked to hear about Dr. Shoffner. I have worked with him for years at the hospital. He was definitely a nurse's doctor and always easily approached and always with a smile. I saw him just a few weeks ago and he was his usual happy self. He saw 2 of my family members very quickly just because he knew me. Dr Shoffner was a true role model of the medical profession and treated every person with respect and kindness. He will truly be missed in the world of medicine in Macon GA. Well done good and faithful servant.

Dear Family and friends,

Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I only knew Dr. Shoffner through stories that were shared with me by my mother who saw him last year for a mild stroke. Years ago he was my grandmothers physician and my mother told me what a wonderful and compassionate man he was and how good he was to her. I am so sorry that he had to leave you all so soon. Please know that his legacy lives on in the hearts of many and that I rejoice in knowing that one day I will meet him and get to thank him for the great work that he did here on Earth.

I was so shocked to see this notice of the passing of Dr. Shoffner. A great doctor. He treated my dad a couple of years ago when he suffered a major stroke. He was so kind and caring to us. He explained everything carefully where we could understand what was going on with my dad. He broke it down whereas I can to this day explain my dad's medical condition to others who wants to know. Dr. Shoffner was amazed at how well my dad was doing. A very caring doctor. I know he will be missed. May God be with the family during your time of grief.

Wow I can hardly still believe that this is real. I first met Dr. Shoffner as a patient about 12 years ago and what a blessing he was in my life as a physician but he seemed so much more than that.
