Grace Walker Salter

Grace Walker (Harris) Salter -THOMASTON - Mrs. Grace Walker (Harris) Salter died Monday, March 16, 2009, in Thomaston, GA. -Mrs. Salter was born on December 22, 1915, in Roberta, GA. She was the daughter of the late William Felton Harris, Sr., and Mary Eugenia (Walker) Harris of Roberta, Crawford County, GA. She had resided in Thomaston since 1934. -Mrs. Salter received a Two-Year Normal Diploma from Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, GA., in June, 1934, and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the same institution in the summer of 1938. She later earned her Master of Education degree from Mercer University, Macon, in the summer of 1952. Her final degree was Specialist in Education, earned at Georgia College in the summer of 1968. For 41 years she was an elementary school teacher in the Thomaston and Upson County public schools, retiring in June, 1976. -Mrs. Salter was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, where she was the Sunday School pianist for the Primary Grades for 50 years. She served as secretary for the Greene Group of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Thomaston-Upson County Chapter of Retired Teachers. For many years she was especially interested in compiling family histories of her own family and allied families. She was a member of the D.A.R. and the U.D.C. -Mrs. Salter is survived by sisters, Mrs. Tom (Elizabeth) Roberts of Thomaston, and Mrs. Hulon C. (Lael) Tribble, Sr., of Roberta, GA. Her brother, William "Billy" Felton Harris, Jr., preceded her in death. Several nieces and nephews also survive. -In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, 132 Cherokee Rd., Thomaston, GA, 30286. -The family will receive friends Friday, March 20, 2009, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home in Thomaston. -Funeral services will be in the Chapel of Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 1:00 P. M., with Rev. John Barnes officiating. The graveside service will follow in Roberta at the City Cemetery at 2:30 P.M. -Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
