Macon, GA- Gussie (Mathis) Mathews, 78, passed away February 27, 2015. Visitation-Thursday, March 5th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hutchings Funeral Home, 536 New St. Macon, GA. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 6th, at New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 475 Church St. Macon, GA with burial at Middle Georgia Memory Gardens.
Gussie Mathews graduated from Ballard Hudson High School and Fort Valley State University. She was the former proprietor of Mathis Grill & Lounge, Mathis Beauty Shop and later retired from Charter Lake Hospital.
Survivors include: daughters, Elnora M. Linton (David), Hampton, GA, Rowena Clark, Sandy Springs, GA; sons, Rowan Mathews, Atlanta GA and Roye. E Mathews, II (Latrisha) Macon, GA.; sisters, Ruth Jackson, Laura Deshazier (Ira), all of Macon and Maggie Childrey, Jersey City, NJ; 5 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

To: Elnora, Rowena, Rowan, and Roye our deepest condolences to you all from the Paul family. You had such loving parents and they loved you all dearly. They were a young inspiring couple in the neighborhood and loved by everyone. Gussie was beautiful, soft spoken, and could do some hair. I know you have fond memories of her so cherish them. Mathis family,
Losing a loved one is never easy, especially a mother. I still think of my mom and I miss her still today (after over 30 years of her passing). I shared that to let you know from experience that God will bring you through this difficult time. Trust in him, lean on him because he is dependable. I have already prayed for the family and asked God to grant you supernatural peace. Cherish the memories as can tell from all of the remarks that Ms. Gussie was a remarkable woman.

I'll always remember Mrs Mathews as being a very energetic lady. Her children and I all grew up together on Ruby Dr..neighbors in fact. I no longer live there but some of my family does. When I'd go for a visit I would see her in her yard busy working and I would think to myself how nice it is that Eleanor, Rowan, Rowena, and Robbie to still have an active mother since I'd lost both my parents years ago. I'm gonna miss not seeing her in the yard and hollering "Hey Mrs Mathews." She'd smile and wave at me. This has been going on for many many years and I'm really gonna miss her.
