James Whitney Haney, Jr.

Dallas , TX- James Whitney Haney, Jr., husband of Janice Smarr Haney, passed away November 19, 2014. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 2:00PM, at New Providence Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, 2560 U.S 41, Smarr, Georgia, 31029.
Whitney, as everyone called him, was born in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Alice Flowers Haney and James W. Haney, Sr. He graduated from Landon High School where he played football and learned to use interesting words from his favorite teacher, Mrs. Perkins. In 1956 he graduated from The Citadel with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a commission in the Air Force. He served three years as Wing Communication officer at Dow Air Force Base SAG. His career in the computer industry began in 1956 at R.C.A in Camden, N.J and North Palm Beach, FL, where he served as manager of small business systems and technical manager/engineer. He then went to work for Harris Corp. in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Dallas, TX, where he held numerous managerial positions from 1973 to 1985. He was Vice President of Operations, Development and Artificial Intelligence at Xerox Corporation in Palo Alto, CA until 1988. He retired from PAR Technology of New Hartford, NY, as President and COO in 1998 but remained on the board of directors until 2004.
He and his wife, Janice, traveled the world for business and pleasure, where Whit made many friends whom he cared for dearly. He held numerous memberships all over the country; North Palm Beach C.C., FL, Bent Tree C.C. Dallas, TX, Palo Alto Hills C.C., CA, Yanadasas C. C., New Hartford, NY, Atlanta Athletic C.C., Duluth, GA, Stonebridge C.C, The Ranch C.C., and ElDorado, all of McKinney, TX.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David W. Haney and sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Smarr Wilson.
Survivors include; his loving wife of 59 years, Janice Smarr Haney of Dallas, TX; sons, James W. Haney, III and his wife Louise Magee Haney of Greenville, NC, Jeffrey W. Haney of Atlanta, GA, Michael S. Haney of Dallas, TX and John A. Haney of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, James Magee Haney PGA of Kitty Hawk, NC, Matthew Whitney Haney, attending graduate school at the University of South Carolina, Holland (Holly) Haney, John (Jack) Haney, and William Haney all of Dallas, TX; brother and sister in- law, Billie and Frank Coggin and Dewey Edmond Wilson; nieces and nephews, Julie Haney Sullivan of the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN, David W. Haney of Live Oak, FL, Victoria Coggin Palmer of Fayetteville, GA, Frank E. Coggin, Jr. of Ft. Myers, FL, Dewey E. Wilson, of N. Augusta, SC and Stephen Wilson of Atlanta, GA; and extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The New Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 2560 U.S. 41, Smarr, GA 31209 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 886 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201.
