I only knew David thru his brother-in-law, Mark Morris, as he relayed his pride of David's accomplishments in the service of our country and his pride of haveing David as his brother-in-law and friend. There are no easy words to say at a time like this, but I want Jill and Mark Morris and all of Capt. John David Hortman's family to know that I am truly saddened that you and our country have lost David in our future. I truly hope you’ve been comforted by the memories of your times with David throughout your lives.
To Captain John David Hortman, United State Army, I offer my slow hand salute. Thank you, Sir, for your service to our country.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to CPT. John David Hortman our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for John. And to John it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom while serving in the U.S. Army. John, no greater patriotism is shown than a soldier lay down his life in service to his country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks and you will always be remembered for your dedicated and loyal service to our great nation. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace. DUTY-HONOR-COUNTRY USMA-2004

On behalf of the 1,307 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to John’s family and loved ones.
