Mamie Denson Obituary

Mamie Griffin Denson -GRAY - Mamie Griffin Denson, 89, died at her home on July 18, 2011. She was a lifelong resident of Middle Georgia. A private, family memorial service has already been held. At a later time, the family will host a champagne celebration of her life. -Mrs. Denson was born in Jeffersonville to Carrie Carswell and Henry Faulk "Bud" Griffin, Jr. At the age of ten, she moved with her family to Macon, where she attended and was graduated from Alexander II Grammar School, Miller High School for Girls and Wesleyan College. Mrs. Denson was the valedictorian of her Miller graduating class and a magna cum laude graduate of Wesleyan. Much later in life she received a certificate from Le Cordon Bleu school of cooking in Paris, France. -It was during her senior year at Wesleyan that The Philadelphia Inquirer named her as one of the ten most photogenic college girls in the South. Mrs. Denson then became a model for the advertising department of The Macon Telegraph and The Macon News. -Mrs. Denson was a teacher and librarian. She taught French and Latin at Miller High School for Girls and at Jones County High School. She also taught the seventh grade at Alexander III Grammar School. She was the librarian at both The Macon Telegraph and The Macon News. -Mrs. Denson was a charter member of Highland Hills Baptist Church in Macon. She was also a member of the Cotillion Club, the Macon Women's Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. -Mrs. Denson was preceded in death by her husband: L. A. "Buddy" Denson. She is survived by a daughter: Terrie Denson; and nieces: Caroline Griffin Scarborough and Deborah Griffin. In both the United States and France, she has great-nieces and a great-nephew, as well as great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Last, but not least, she is survived by nine granddogs and a grandcat. -The family would like to thank Dr. Linda Arnold and Heartland Hospice for making it possible for Mrs. Denson to fulfill her wish to die at home. We would also like to thank North Georgia Medical Transport for providing kind and gentle service on literally a moment's notice. -It was Mrs. Denson's desire that the custom of visitation not be observed at her death. The family, therefore, requests that her wish be honored and respected. In lieu of visits, food and flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the following: Richland Restoration League, Post Office Box 681, Jeffersonville, Georgia 31044; Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road, Macon, Georgia, 31210; Highland Hills Baptist Church, 1370 Briarcliff Road, Macon, Georgia 31211; Idyll Acres Rescue Horse Ranch, 280 Highway 18 West, Gray, Georgia 31032; or to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, Post Office Box 10086, Toledo, Ohio 43699-0086. -Bridges Funeral Home and Crematory in Gray has charge of arrangements. -Please visit the online memorial at: www.bridgesfh.com. I appreciate the reminder of Mamie Denson's passing in 2011. It reminds me of what a remarkable woman she was and what an impact she had on my life when I was only 23. She was 25 years my senior but we were kindred souls. I have never forgotten her.

Terrie,
We never met but I worked with your mother at the Macon newspaper in 1969-1970. She was the most remarkable woman I'd ever met and I kept in touch with her until a couple of years ago when her Christmas card was returned. Your mother was a first-class lady and someone I admired beyond words. I'm deeply sorry for your loss. She was an amazing woman.
