Margery Zerko Obituary

Margery Short Zerko
Perry, GA- Margery Short Zerko, 97, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014. Graveside Services will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Gentiva Hospice, 319 Margie Drive, Warner Robins, Georgia 31088 or Perry Historical Society, 901 Northside Drive, Perry, Georgia 31069.
Mrs. Zerko was born in Perry to the late James H. and Maggie Edwards Short. She graduated from Perry High School in 1934 and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Huntington College. She was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force with the Women's Corps during World War II. She was certified to assist with Physical Therapy during her time in the service. She received a Master's Degree from Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Diplome' Superieure from Alliance Francaise in Paris, France. Mrs. Zerko attended Missionary School and became a long-time missionary for the Methodist Church, travelling all over the world. Later in life, she was a GED instructor in Middle Georgia and helped many people to better themselves through the years. Her husband, Fred Zerko, originally from Austria, escaped from the Nazis as a young boy. They fell in love and were married for many years before his passing in 1978. Mrs. Zerko wrote her memoirs in 2004, entitled "My Hopscotch Life", describing her years as a missionary, a teacher, and a veteran. She was one of those people who made the world better just by being in it. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James Short and Wesley Short.
Left to cherish the memories of Margery are her sister, Elizabeth Chapman (Harris) of Perry; her nieces and nephews, Bill Short (Joyce), Joann Short, Ken Chapman (Susan), Wayne Chapman (Yvonne), Jim Chapman (Paula), Lynne Short, Steve Short, and Greg Short; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends are invited to leave condolences for the family in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

I am so sorry to hear about Mrs. Zerko's death. She was my French teacher in High School. I remember enjoying a delightful end of school "French" dinner at her house. She was a wonderful teacher and person.

I am in France visiting Kelly and just got a message from Mike Kelly. So sorry to hear of Miss Margie's passing. Mike Franklin reminded me that she taught him French and his love for France which has also been passed onto our children!!
She and Mr. Fred (whom I thought of often these past two weeks because France has many Citreon cars) were wonderful neighbors to both my parents and my brother and I.
Please know I am thinking and praying for each one of you.

I am so sorry, I just read of Ms Margie's passing. The world lost a wonderful lady as she was the most worldly person I knew. She and Mr. Fred were the most wonderful neighbors on Duncan Ave and so good to mom and dad. All of the family are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. Duncan Ave is having a great block party this weekend. MK
