Marvin Dawson, Jr. -TYBEE ISLAND - Marvin Dawson, Jr., 76, died Tuesday, April 19. A native of Jemison, AL, Marvin served with distinction as a First Lieutenant In the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star. After achieving a Ph.D. in Education at Indiana University, he took up teaching positions at Auburn University in Alabama and later at Mercer University, in Macon, GA, where he chaired the Education Department, holding a Callaway Professorship at the school. -Marvin was Involved In the community and especially with historical preservation, helping to form the Intown Macon Neighborhood Association and serving as the first president of the Macon Heritage Foundation and winning preservation awards in both Macon and Iowa City, IA. -In his later years on Tybee Island, Marvin was inspired by the nature and the sea, experimenting with blending the arts of photography and painting. -Surviving members of his family Include: daughter, Michelle Bourre of Paris, France (husband Jean-Luc and three grandsons); son, Michael of Atlanta, GA (wife Donna and one daughter); son, Mark of Atlanta; and longtime friend Larry Weeks of Tybee Island. -A memorial service for family and friends on Tybee Island is planned Arrangements by H.
