LCDR Maurice E. "Matt" Keene, Jr., US Navy (Ret.)
February 1, 1923 - August 1, 2016
Centerville, GA- Matt Keene, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 1, 2016.
Matt was born on February 1, 1923 in Gordonville, Pennsylvania. With great pride and honor he served in the United States Navy for 30 years, including serving during World War II. Matt retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Following his years of active duty, he began his civil service career at Robins Air Force Base as a Production Manager. Matt ran for the Georgia State House of Representatives and served as a councilman for the City of Centerville in 1980. Later, He was elected as Mayor of Centerville where he served from 1988 until 1997. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer and a public servant.
His loving wife of 36 years, Louise Bassett Keene, and parents, Maurice Edgar Keene, Sr. and Mabel Mae Groff Houck, preceded him in death.
His memory will forever be treasured by his children, Iris Keene of Ellenwood; Cyndi Scott of Chesapeake, Virginia; Samuel Keene (Teresa) of Stockbridge; Joseph Keene of Stockbridge; Gary Davis (Yvonne) of Centerville; grandchildren, Sybil Suddeth, Shannon Davis, Lindsey Irene Reeves, Alec Keene Hill, Elliott Maurice Tyson, Sr., Dyllan Valentino Cosner, Scarlett Strange, Jennifer Horton, Jesse Craig, Riley Patton, Larry Patton, Brittany Patton; 18 great-grandchildren, brother, Charles Keene and his wife of Zimbabwe, South Africa, and sister, Marci Xenias of Pennsylvania.
Visitation with Matt's family will be Friday, August 5, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2016 in the Chapel of McCullough. Following the service, Matt will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, the late Louise Keene, in Centerville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Maurice "Matt" Keene, Jr. to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins, Ga 31088 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn 38105.

To Matt & Louise Keene's family ~ I had the honor to work with Mr. Keene at the City of Centerville. I pray all of you will cherish your family's memories! I respected him, his wife, and the people at city hall. God bless all of you! Hopefully each of you learned from him about being a father, a husband, a Christian leader, and a good friend. God speed Mr. Keene, you and Ms. Louise will be missed but not forgotten.~
