Russel Wellman Obituary
Dr. Russel E. Wellman -LIZELLA - On February 4, 2006, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, Russel Wellman, passed away. Mr. Wellman, a resident of Lizella, GA and formerly Southbury, CT, was born in South New Berlin, NY on July 16, 1922. Dr. Wellman received his BA from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. -"Doc", as he was affectionately known by his colleagues, retired from Xerox in NY and Pitney Bowes in CT where he worked as a Scientist, Physical Chemist and Reliability Engineer. During his career he worked on space suit fibers, solid rocket fuels, and copier toners. He is listed in the Who's Who registry of Science and Engineering, is a fellow in the American Institute of Chemists and the New York Academy of Science. He was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, The Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers, The American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. -His achievements include a number of patents on Microencapsulating, Pressure Fixing Toners and Thermal Transfer. He was a Sigma Si; a veteran of WWII, an avid Bridge player and author of numerous scientific articles. After his retirement he contributed greatly in work and deed to environmental causes, and was an advisor to presidential committees on global warming. -He was known as a teacher and mentor who blessed others with his with good humor, common sense, and his lifelong appreciation and deep respect for mankind, nature and science. With all of this, Russ was, first and foremost, a husband, father and uncle who guided his family through the best and worst of times with strength and wisdom and his personal memoirs, "From Colonial Times to the Computer Age", will help sustain his grieving family who miss him deeply. -Dr. Wellman was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Harold. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Elisabeth G. Wellman; his daughter Doris Wellman Sanders, Esq.; his son Thomas Wellman and wife Kulistan Renee Jamison, and his grandchildren Shawn, Liesel, Krystal, and three great-grand children; his sister-in-law Marguerite Wellman Cushman; his niece Dr. Judy Malo Wellman, and his two nephews Dave and Kendall Wellman. -The family intends to return his mortal remains to Rathbone, NY, and will announce a family memorial service later this spring.
