Bobby Sugar Hinds
Sept. 22, 1931 - March 14, 2023
MADISON - Bobby Sugar Hinds, The Jump Rope King, age 91, of Madison, died March 14, 2023, at his home.
He married Joyce Harrington in 1955, and together they raised four children. He is survived by his wife Joy; and children: Jef (Jeanne), Jil, Juli, Jon (Jessica); and four grandchildren: Emily, Sean (Amy), Joelle and Jackie.
His storied career as UW boxer and legendary promotor of his Lifeline jump rope and gym company made him a local celebrity. He appeared on the Johnny Carson show in 1975, and was profiled by Charles Kuralt of CBS news in 1978, with a follow up in 2013. He donated jump ropes to the American Heart Association's fundraisers. He loved to rub elbows with celebrities but always wanted to help the underdog. He had a passion for art and history and taught us to never stop learning.
A celebration of Bobby's life is being planned for a later date.

Met Bobby at Madison in 79. Loved his gym and ropes and sold lots of them. To Joe Byrd of Flint PAL boxing and gave a yellow and black one to Dan Gable Now pumping rubber is everywhere! am sure he is skipping and selling his his fitness programs to the fat and sassy angels. Fortunate to have known Bobby! God bless his family

Although I am late to offer my condolences to the Hinds family, I wanted to express how grateful I was to have received a TNT black resistance band and some other training aids from Mr. Hinds many, many years ago as a teenager.
I called the Lifeline offices expressing my inability at the time to afford purchasing equipment and he graciously said "don't worry, it's on me".
I've never forgotten that.
RIP Mr. Hinds and, thank you!

I met Bobby in the mid 90´s at his jump rope facility on a Sunday afternoon. Ere the only ones there and after time, he offered me a job. I didn´t accept, but always thought of him as a distant friend.

I met Bobby at UW and saw him fight in the Pan Am Games at the fieldhouse. He was always my hero, funny and always with a smile. He made a special trip to give me the lapel pin of Bucky jumping rope.

His cousin Luella Hinds (Irvin) was so proud of her cousin until the time she passed at 55 years old in Arizona. I got to talk to him and his assistant 15 years ago. Bobby and my Grandfather Roland had a lot in common.

I have known Bobby since he came to Madison, through my late father (once captain, then asst. coach of the UW boxing team) and later through The Second Round reunions of UW boxers. My first car was a gift from Bobby. Always liked and admired him.

I was there when he won the slugfest with (I believe) Art Saey.. The "Bush" went wild! Being a "Battling Little Badgef" he became a hero to me.
