OREGON - David Dean Mandt, age 95, of Oregon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on March 5, 1927, in Madison, the son of Lawrence and Laura (Williamson) Mandt.

Dave graduated from Oregon High School in 1945 where he excelled in basketball, football and boxing. He went on to attend UW-Madison, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and joining the UW basketball team in 1950-51. He married Shirley Peterson in 1960 and they raised their family in Oregon. Dave and Shirley were married for 40 years until Shirley's passing in 2001.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1953 in Germany. Dave owned Mandt Oil Company, where he delivered fuel oil and ran a full-service Texaco, later Conoco, station for his entire career. He created and tended the most beautiful garden in front of his station that was a welcoming touch to Main Street.

Dave had a very engaging personality. He was always more interested in others than himself and was a vibrant, good-humored, positive person. He was a supportive and proud father and grandfather. Up until the last week of his life he could be heard belting out in his deep voice his favorite song, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning." Dave's never-ending curiosity and love of people brought him joy, as did golfing, bowling, skiing, and cheering on the Badgers. He also loved taking the "scenic route" with family and friends, assuring them he was not lost but rather on an adventure!

Dave is survived by his son, Paul; daughter, Lori (John) Docter; grandson, Drew Docter; granddaughter, Hanna Docter; loving companion, Lois Bavery; and dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Shirley Peterson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; sister, Ann Peterson; and two brothers, Harold Mandt and Larry Mandt.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 12 noon on Friday, July 29, 2022. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the celebration of life on Friday.
