March 26, 1941 - Feb. 4, 2024

SHEBOYGAN/MADISON - Eugene G. Nelson, age 82, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024, after a brief battle with dementia.

Gene was born on March 26, 1941, in Madison, WI, to George and Milred Nelson. He attended St. Bernard Catholic School from 2nd through 8th grade. Gene was proud of his time as an altar boy and friendships that were gained. He then attended and graduated from East High School in 1959. In June of 1959, Gene went to bootcamp at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, as a member of the Army National Guard.

Gene began working as the Dane County Controller in the mid-1960s and stayed in the position until his retirement in 2002. In 1972, Gene married Marilyn Hanson at St. John's Catholic Church in Spring Green, WI. Gene was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. He helped found the Madison Packer Backers, Inc, where he served as a board member for many years. Gene's best memory was attending the Ice Bowl and then heading to Florida for Super Bowl II to thaw out! Gene and Marilyn retired to Florida in 2008 where they made many friends and memories.

Gene is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 52 years; children: Tina (Jon) Becker and Bob; grandchildren: Andrew Becker, Kimberly (Josh) Rindt, Nicholas Becker; and great-grandchildren: Isabelle and Theo Rindt. Further survived by many nieces, nephews and other family members. He is proceeded in death by his parents, brother and sister.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2024, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave, Madison. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Marilyn and family I am so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I remember all the good fun with the Packer Backers and you and Gene. Bill passed too so I understand the grief you have and I send my love to you.

I always appreciated how Gene would sit down with people and figure out a solution to their problems

Marilyn, Tina, and Bob - I'm so sorry for your loss. I always loved to hear Dad and Gene tell stories of the shenanigans from their early years. Their friendship lasted a lifetime and I'm sure they are tearing it up in heaven. May God bless you.

Condolences to Gene's family. I had the privilege of working with Gene during the 1990s when I was the Dane County Director of Administration, then Director of Human Services and Chief of Staff to the County Executive. Gene was a professional whom we all trusted for his integrity, knowledge and accurate financial information. He truly served the public.
