FORT ATKINSON - Gary A. Johnson, age 74, of Fort Atkinson, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Home Again Assisted Living in Cambridge. He was born on Oct. 25, 1949, at Edgerton Hospital, the son of Arthur and Gladys (Larson) Johnson.
Growing up on the Koshkonong Prairie, Gary and his brothers worked tirelessly raising cows and tobacco and then graduated from Cambridge high school. Post graduation he served in the U.S. Army, including traveling to Africa. Upon returning stateside, he worked on the railroad and finished his professional career as a welder at Sub Zero in Madison. Beyond his career, he truly enjoyed watching his children be involved in recitals, performances and sporting events. Gary enjoyed watching all Wisconsin sports team, farming, including hogs and crops, hunting and Utica baseball games. Most of all, he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids, including giving the dogs treats while watching the grandkids play with his toy tractors at home.
Gary is survived by his two daughters, Bringa Johnson and Toren (Scott Nestberg) Johnson; son, Seth Johnson; grandchildren, Rould, Hjemli and Gunda Nestberg; brothers, Charles (Bobbie Sue) Johnson and Dale (Dawn) Johnson; sister-in-law, Jane Johnson; former spouse, Janet Johnson; and many loving family members, including his cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gladys; and brothers, Richard Johnson and James Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at EAST KOSHKONONG LUTHERAN CHURCH, 454 E. Church St., Cambridge, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, with Pastor Eric Hanson presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
