George Newton Obituary

George Newton

December 3, 1955 - March 26, 2026

COTTAGE GROVE - George Newton, age 70, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at his home, surrounded by those who loved him. He was born on December 3, 1955, in Madison, the son of Roger and Agnes (Crotty) Newton.

George attended Monona Grove High School. He went on to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a proud member of The Operating Engineers Union, Local Union 139. He built a career as an operator in the Madison area, contributing to countless projects that shaped the community. He loved his work and took great pride in being an operator.

A lifelong learner, George was an avid reader and historian who delighted in sharing books and discussing them at length. His talents were wide ranging, mechanic, carpenter and craftsman, skills he put to use building several homes for himself and even one for his son. Above all, George was happiest sitting behind the controls of an excavator, doing the work he loved.

George is survived by his daughters, Nicole (Andy) Herfel, Lori Newton, son, Tom (Karly) Newton; grandchildren, Andrew, Audyn, Acen, Arthur and Arlo Herfel, Raelee Harrington, and Ruth and Lucy Newton; sisters, Julie (Dan) Hartung, Mary Newton-Kellogg, Janis (David) Schneider and Lisa (Dale) Franke; nieces, Heather Surana, Courtney Hyzer, Melissa Reithmeyer and Lauren Franke; many heartbroken women and Jay. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Agnes; and brother-in-law, Mike Kellogg.

In keeping with George's wishes, no services will be held. The family wishes to thank Agrace HospiceCare for all their kindness and care. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
