Irene V. McEvilly
April 15, 1925 - Oct. 4, 2022
EDGERTON/DEFOREST - Irene Viola McEvilly, 97, left her family to meet the Lord who had given her so much. Born in Superior, Wisconsin, to Mary and Henry Christo Ojala, she grew up in Oulu, a large Finnish community. She met and married Donald McEvilly while he was in the CCC. Together they had three children Sharon, Don and Mary.
For over 25 years Irene proudly worked at Wisconsin Central Colony. After retirement she went on to volunteer at the Veteran's (VA) Hospital for 20 years with best friend and sister-in-law Eleanor McEvilly and brother-in-law Tom McEvilly. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 501.
Irene loved life, laughter, family, especially her four amazing grandchildren - Paul (Jen) Peterson, Allison (Karl) Bancker, Meredith (Andy) Stensven and Matt (Bec) Porter, who went on to give her 12 wildly-smart, talented and beautiful great-grandchildren.
Surviving are son Don, daughter Mary (Doug) Porter, son-in-law Gerry Peterson, brother John Mehtala, sisters-in-law Ann (Don) Tofte and Rita Mehtala, as well as many caring nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband Don; loving daughter Sharon Peterson, sister Violet and brother Walter, and the Mehtala step-siblings Helen, Raymond, Leslie and Judy.
The family would like to thank Dr Stephen Thomas for keeping her healthy, and Drs Judith Fitzgerald and John Geanon for saving her eyesight to see her family grow, watch Perry and play sudoku.
