James Norton Gunn

James (Jimmy) Norton Gunn, aged 67, died from angiosarcoma, a rare lung cancer, on September 1, 2023 at the Agrace Hospice Facility in Janesville, Wisconsin. A Madison resident for his adult life, Jimmy was born in Chicago, IL to the late Harold and Aldine Gunn. He was the youngest of four siblings: the late John W. Gunn, the late Marcet Gunn Tinsley, and his loving sister Lorri Gunn Wirsum of Chicago, who survives him and is pictured below. He is also survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Wendt) Gunn, pictured below on their wedding day, and the Vine family. He resided with the Vines, close friends of his parents, in Wisconsin during his teen years and considered them part of his extended family. His good friend Cherie Miller (nee Vine) was with him in the hours before his death and was a loving presence in his life, especially in the weeks before his death.

Jimmy loved music, particularly the Blues. He played both acoustic and electric guitar and the harmonica. He was part of a band in his youth with his lifelong friend, Bobby Vine. Jimmy is remembered by all who knew him for his intelligence, openhearted kindness, and sympathy for the less fortunate. He had the most soulful brown eyes and a lovable nature. He cared for his wife, Patty, who had extensive health problems, with unwavering devotion. He and Patty shared a love of cats and always had "kitties" as part of their household. He leaves behind two much-loved furry companions, Samson and Princess. No services are planned. His ashes will be scattered along the Mississippi according to his wishes.
